Debunking Economics- Revised and Expanded Edition exposes what many non-economists may have suspected and a minority of economists have long known: that economic theory is not only unpalatable, but also plain wrong. When the original Debunking Economicswas published back in 2001, the market economy seemed invincible, and conventional "neoclassical" economic theory basked in the limelight. Steve Keen argued that economists deserved none of the credit for the economy's performance, and "The false confidence it has engendered in the stability of the market economy has encouraged policy-makers to dismantle some of the institutions which initially evolved to try to keep its instability within limits." That instability exploded with the devastating financial crisis of 2007, and now haunts the global economy with the prospect of another Depression. In this expanded and updated new edition, Keen builds on his scathing critique of conventional economic theory while explaining what mainstream economists cannot: why the crisis occurred, why it is proving to be intractable, and what needs to be done to end it. Essential for anyone who has ever doubted the advice or reasoning of economists, Debunking Economics- Revised and Expanded Edition provides a signpost to a better future.

Review
Praise for the First Edition:
"Debunking Economics may not delight economic conservatives, but it is certainly necessary. Our hope must be that it will be read by enough people to prompt reform of our economic thinking and save our endangered societies" -- James Cumes, author of How to Become a Millionaire without Really Working"Particularly useful to those, like myself, who are interested in economics but not formally trained in it. Debunking Economics reveals that neoclassical economic doctrines are faulty...because the fundamental assumptions from which such doctrines have been derived are less than self-evident." -- Henry C.K. Liu, Chairman, Liu Investment Group
"If you are interested in how the economy really works (and want to challenge an economist) then read this book." -- James Dick, Professional Members Division, The Economic Society of Australia
"Keen's serious but accessible look at the shaky logical and mathematical foundations of neoclassical economics will be of great interest to students and open-minded economists alike. And his insightful survey of alternative schools of thought lends substance to his call for a new economics." -- Don Goldstein, Associate Professor of Economics, Allegheny College
"A wide-ranging yet accessible critique of the staples of neoclassical pedagogy." --Alan G. Isaac, Associate Professor of Economics, American University
"This text carefully follows the form of argument familiar to all economics undergraduates, through to conclusions from which under-graduates are more usually protected.Avoiding polemic or hyperbole, the case that he presents is all the more damning for its clarity and systematic approach." --John M. Legge, Associate Professor, LaTrobe University
"Debunking Economics...will transform the way economics is taught and thought." --Jan Otto Andersson, Professor of Economics, bo Akademi University, Finland
"Professional economists include their own best critics. Steve Keen is one of the very best...translating the algebra into plain language, he deploys a devastating theoretical attack on neoclassical theory."--Hugh Stretton, Fellow of the Academies of the Humanities and Social Sciences, and author of Economics: A New Introduction
"Refreshingly provocative." -- Geoffrey Fishburn, Department of Economics, University of New South Wales

STEVE KEEN, I LOVE YOU
By Tom
This was a brilliant book and I could not recommend it more highly. I am a non-economics student and I found the book to be a little dense in parts. With enough effort, however, I felt I could understand all the arguments he makes in the book and the concepts on which they rely. I am so glad I read it, because now I truly do have the intellectual weapons in my arsenal to take on free-market clerics and the pernicious ideologies of neoliberalism and right libertarianism. What utter tripe. Why doesn't Richard Dawkins spend his time refuting these religions, rather than mostly harmless ones involving magical people in the sky? These ones actually ruin the lives of millions of people, and pollute and poison our world (albeit indirectly).
Thank you Steve Keen, you legend!
And for those people who seriously believe that the 'free market' maximises social welfare, I would highly recommend that you read this book too. The fact that you came to accept this bizarre religion to begin with suggests that you have trouble with reasoning, but if you have just one rational bone in your body, you will come to recant this dogma as soon as you finish reading this tour de force.

Well worth the read
By FDR
If you listen to the Fed chairman, the sage government and bank economists and the talking heads on CNN, you will never understand how the economy really works. Steve Keen systematically demolishes the underpinnings of neo-classical economic thought and shows them to be fallacious myths. The economy is dynamic system and rarely in equilibrium. Neo-classical theory is based on the economy being in equilibrium. It is no wonder then that economic bubbles and depressions come as a surprise to economists because they cannot happen according to their theories. (That is why they call them "exogenous" shocks.)
If other sciences (like physics, chemistry and even biology) based their theories similarly, we would still be living in the stone age. The wonder to me is that, even with the incompetent interference of the central banks and governments, the economy functions as well as has.

Dense but worth the effort
By bc
When the history books are written this guy will be acknowledged as the one who fixed the errors of Keynes and by his putative followers Krugman, Delong, Stiglitz, Summers etc. Speaking as an applied mathematician trained in non linear theoretical mechanics of fluids, I'm here to tell you there has been a revolution in most disciplines already driven by advances in non linear analysis. In Physics, quantum mechanics is the direct result of applying perturbation theory to linearizing the wave equation. More broadly, chaos theory is changing the way we look at ecosystems, climate, and yes, even economies. Ours wouldn't be the first civilization to collapse because we were bad at math. If we do blow it however, we'll be the first to almost get it right but then blew it anyway.
All I can say is Steve Keen is a real mensch, he does his math correctly, and many more of us smart guys need to support this guys approach to macroeconomics. No way are the old school math impaired poseurs like Krugman going to do it.
