The book traced the journey of his Hakka grandfather who left China for Indonesia in early 20th century as an indentured servant, of his father who was born and grew up in East Java and of himself as a Chinese-Indonesian who grew up in Indonesian, lived through racial and ethnic discriminations and the violent pogrom during 1965-1966. It also chronicled his educational experiences in Chinese high schools in Indonesia and his quest for a higher education that was denied to him in his native land because of his race and educational background. His leap-of-faith journey that took him to Canada, where he succeeded to obtain a doctoral degree in biochemistry and led him eventually to settle in the Golden State of the United States as a research scientist. The book also provided a brief history of Hakka people and their migration to Indonesia. The book points out the fallacy of the concept of native and non-native Indonesians, challenges both Chinese-Indonesians and the Native Indonesians to face the reality of today and to honestly and to objectively discuss what each group has done to other to the detriment of their country.

About the Author
Wu Da Ying, Ph.D. (a Pinyin romanisation of the Chinese name. He is also known as Ngo, That Tjien), a Hakka Chinese, was born in Java, Indonesia. He was educated in Chinese-Indonesian schools in East Java. After a brief stay in Jakarta, he went to Canada to attend University of Saskatchewan and received a B.Sc. (Honours) in 1970 and completed a Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1973. He was elected a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemists (FAIC) in 1991, a Fellow of the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (FACB) in 2005 and a Fellow of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (FRACI) in 2006. He has published over one hundred forty peer-reviewed biochemical articles, seven biochemistry-related textbooks and four cookbooks. Peilin Ngo received a B.A. in Sociology from the University of California, at Santa Cruz in 2008 and an M.A. in Gerontology from San Francisco State University in 2010. She is now pursuing a law degree (J.D.).

Simply Amazing

A wonderfully intimate autobiography chronicling the journey of That Ngo's (Wu Da Ying) life - from birth in Indonesia, to his time in China during the tumultuous cultural revolution, to his passage into Canada, and finally, to the United States. The author gives us an unabashed and uncensored view of his childhood through his own eyes. He criticizes the massively corrupt governmental powers that existed at the time of his childhood in Indonesia, those who savagely tore at the very foundations upon which he was raised.
Ngo speaks candidly about the racial segregation and discrimination against Indonesian-Chinese citizens residing in Indonesia during his childhood. He writes from the heart and is unafraid to criticize and challenge the actions of those in power, even when the criticism stirs up resentment in those who would rather gloss over the terrors of the past (ie. the other reviewer who left a 1 star review simply because she/he disagrees with Ngo's viewpoints).
Some readers may find this story to be "biased." However, that is the very beauty of this literary work. Rather than sweep over the tragedies that occurred in Indonesia as if they never existed, Ngo tells us vividly in this story, of having a machete held to his neck by rebels during the bloody coup in 1965 - an experience that he will never forget, and an experience powerfully conveyed to the reader.
We have a duty in this world, to never forget the past, to honor our heritage, and to live on fearlessly despite oppression or opposition. The author's story is an exemplar of such, and his autobiography is not only a personal tale of triumph, but also of one man's ability to rise above immense oppression and flourish against all odds.

A true spirited life experience

Being an immigrant myself to the U.S., I completely share the thought process with Dr. Ngo. He told it all just like it was, without exaggeration. However, he digested these experiences, regurgitated them in a positive aspect, then put them in context back into his life. Beyond these plain stories and memories is a strong, positive spirit that realizes what we call the 'American Dream'. I hope all American born 1st generation children read this book, learn the true spirit of life.

Thank you. It is a brilliant and enormously important book. I haven't been able to get it out of my head since I read it and I know I'm one of many people who feel the same.
I wish you the best of luck on Amazon and it needs to become an even higher profile book so that many more people get to see it.
