Green Mars continues the story of humans settling the planet in a process called "terraforming." In Red Mars, the initial work in the trilogy, the first 100 scientists chosen to explore the planet disintegrated in disagreement--in part because of pressures from forces on Earth. Some of the scientists formed a loose network underground. Green Mars, which won the 1994 Hugo Award, follows the development of the underground and the problems endemic to forming a new society.

The sequel to Red Mars details an early 22nd-century Mars controlled by Earth's metanationals, gigantic corporations intent on exploiting Mars. Debate among the settlers--some native-born, some the surviving members of the First Hundred--is divided between the minimalist areoformists, who have come to love Mars in all its harshness, and the terraformists, who want to replicate Earth. As the surface of Mars warms and is seeded with genetically altered plants, the settlers await Earth's self-destruction, which they hope will give them a chance to claim their independence. They travel endlessly over every inch of Mars--no mean feat, since most of the First Hundred are criminals wanted for their roles in the failed revolt of 2061--with each kilometer and each group of settlers they meet described in laborious detail. When they're not traveling, these colonists contemplate the history of which they have been a part and which they can only partially recall as a result of their longevity treatments. With the collapse of Earth society and internecine battles among the metanationals, the Martian settlers liberate their cities and declare their planet free. This wide-ranging novel is loaded with all manner of scientific and historical detail, but the story bogs down under its very breadth and seems almost like a Martian year--twice as long as it needs to be. The next and final volume in the trilogy will be Blue Mars .

YA?The second offering in the "Mars Trilogy," an epic SF account of the colonization of Mars. Although it can be read independently, it continues and expands upon the themes introduced in the first volume, and is notable for its examination of issues related to ecology and the humans' relationship with the planet. The story is told from a variety of viewpoints, the first of which is that of a Martian-born boy. A well-written title, rich in contemporary concerns, that belongs in all science fiction collections.

Perhaps A Hundred Pages Too Long

The second book of Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy starts with great promise - some of the same characters, some interesting new characters, some old problems, some interesting new problems - and the plot begins developing nicely. But somewhere along the way the book slows waaaaaay down and I found it difficult to keep my focus. Many of the book's discussions are intricate and interesting: philosophies of engineering an ecosphere, adapting to life on Mars, social structures of new cities, attitudinal differences among generations, and the like. But regrettably, some of those discussions drag on and on and on and become tedious and distracting. I plowed through to the end, but it was plowing indeed and I may have been happier just to finish than I was with the novel's resolution.

A step or two down from the first novel.

Slow in parts and engaging in others. Here Robinson attempts to highlight the social evolution of mars and clearly gets bogged down at times instead of concentrating on small picture happenings to highlight big picture trends which while a good educational exercise makes for bad fiction. Hes best when concentrating on the characters both new and established. Though some stories go nowhere and others have little to no payoff. My hope is that this trend reverses itself for the third novel. However it is to be noted that this is what can be difficult about telling the story of a planet as opposed to a person.

A science fiction masterpeiece with real-world relevance

This is the second book in the Mars trilogy, which should be read as one book -- Red, Green, Blue. Robinson has a rare combination of gifts: a gear-head's technical savvy, a scientist's speculative sophistication ... the natural feel for narrative of a born story-teller, and the style of a poet. It's a powerful array and makes for a compulsively readable, intellectually stimulating and often quite moving epic -- an intimate epic, the best kind. His characters, especially the "first 100", wind up living extended lives through genetic manipulation and so experience first hand the tremendous changes that transform their adopted planet. The struggles between those who wish to leave Mars as it is and those who want to remake it as an alternate Earth, between "metanational" corporations who want to pilfer Mars for its natural resources, governments who want to use immigration there as a safety valve for their own over-population problems cast a prescient reflection on the real difficulties currently afflicting our own planet. These books, first published in the 1990s, have long been known as masterpieces of science-fiction -- but they deserve a mainstream readership as well. Peerless. Read them now, so you can gripe about the upcoming TV version!
