About the Author
In 1978, Anita LaRaia established The Wine School of Atlanta in Atlanta, GA. As the school's director for 26 years, she has taught more than 2,000 wine classes and graduated thousands of students. Anita's wine industry experience includes the retail, wholesale and import business in the U.S. and abroad. She is a sought-after consultant to wine stores, bars and restaurants, and she was the online wine expert for CNN.com. In addition to planning corporate wine tastings, she hosts group wine tours of France and Italy. She has a Master's Degree in Social Psychology from Cornell University. She writes articles for top wine magazines and will soon publish a textbook for culinary schools with Prentice Hall.

It all started with serious sales of "Fat B**tard," "Red Truck," and "Stump Jump." Now wine stores are stocked with bottles bearing wild names. Wine classics with classic labels, however, have not disappeared (although many have updated taste profiles and packaging). The classics still represent the majority of wines sold, which is why the savvy wine buyer needs to know them.
As a wine writer, I receive dozens of press releases about new wineries, vineyards, or vintages. As a wine consultant, I attend frequent trade tastings to find the best newcomers to create exciting restaurant wine lists that customers will crave. (It's a tough job; try sampling 50 wines in an afternoon while staying sober and taking notes!) You learn quickly that smoothness (more balance and fruit concentration) is the sign of a great wine and that better winemaking is happening across the globe.
As a wine teacher, I have to make sense of a mountain of information so that I can explain it to my classes. At wine parties, I entertain everyone from novice to collector with stories of my latest wine and food adventure. Now with Pick a Perfect Wine In No Time I can be your own personal wine advisor. My wine school graduates have called me a wine evangelist because I raise the wine cup and treat wine with the respect it deserves. True, but the other side of my dual nature is more like Friar Tuck. He was the jolly monk who fought alongside Robin Hood, and like the monks of centuries ago who cared for vineyards and invented liqueurs, he always carried a barrel of wine in his wagon. That's why my students also named me Anita La Riot! I try to live up to this image and my business cards read: Wine Woman Sings (yes, I sing at my bookings in memory of my mother, who had a beautiful voice).
How I Learned What I Know About WineBoth my parents were born in Italy, so I am a first-generation Italian American. Having been farmers in Italy, my mother's parents made wine each year in Pennsylvania from fresh Zinfandel grapes that were harvested in California and shipped to their home.
My grandmother also had the best garden in the neighborhood and everything that came to our table was fresh. All the cooking was homemade in the Italian tradition by the women or my father, a trained chef and former candy store/soda fountain owner who made all his own products. (Speaking of ice cream, do you know that Merlot is great with cinnamon, caramel, or butter pecan ice cream?) My dad at one time worked in sales for a wine wholesaler, as did I. I also worked for a major wine importer.
Now you know where I get my great passion for food and wine—and my waistline. Truthfully, I know almost as much about food as I do about wine, which is how I know instinctively what food pairs best with what wine. The best sommeliers (wine stewards) have this talent, and I can teach it to you as well.
But grateful as I am for my European lineage, thank God I was educated in the good old U.S. Though I only use my Cornell master's degree in social psychology to help me woo the public, it has made me an assertive, resourceful woman who feels equal to any challenge. Layered on that is my six-year residence in London, England, where I worked in a large wine store, took courses, and passed a wine certification exam. I arrived in London with no money, no job, and no place to live, but I developed considerable intuition and energy to survive. This risky sojourn brought me to wine as a profession.
My experiences made me who I am and taught me never to be a wine snob. Why? First, it's bloody boring as the British would say; second, someone will always be able to trump you (his or her wine or trip were more expensive or rarer); and third, it defeats the real purpose of wine which is to bring joy and companionship into our lives. Now I'm by passing on my love of wine to you.
Someone once teased that I should bathe in wine. Oh horrors no! I would never do that for it would be a waste of good wine (and cold unless it was mulled wine and then it would be too hot). My cheeky advice: If you want the tingle of bathing in Champagne, use Perrier instead! Actually, you should always drink plenty of water—sparkling or non-sparkling—when you drink wine because all alcohol has a dehydrating effect. Then you won't have that morning after headache. If you still get a hangover, don't blame me. You undoubtedly drank too much and most likely it was not good wine. How much is too much and what's "good" wine? For practical answers (admittedly with attitude), please keep reading.

The book Pick a Perfect wine In No Time was delivered on time and was true to the description. The book is full of easy to read wine information and useful pointers you can take shopping right away. After reading this book I look forward to grocery shopping the wine isle. Wine can be bought by brand, location, sweetness and many more definers. The nicest feature of this book is it introduces a variety of affordable dinner wines for the everyday person.

Finding a wine book by a world class wine expert who just happens to be a world class teacher, and then discovering that it is a delight to read, now THAT'S a perfect book. Too many wine books are intimidating. Others are nothing more than a glorified magazine article, lots of filler and a few pretty pictures. As a former teacher myself, I really appreciate the format and the depth and fun of this presentation. Pick a Perfect Wine pulls the cork on the bottle, rolls out the welcome mat, and invites us all to learn something memorable on each page. I read this book every night when I'm drying my hair, and then I cruise the internet for the wines that capture my imagination. Anita LaRaia's book provides a wealth of websites to recommend ~ and all the tips to get the best wines at the best prices. This book is like having a friend in the wine industry, one who lifts us up to discover the wealth of the world's vineyards.
Anita LaRaia makes the world of wine seem fun and accessible, with inside stories and information that feel like a front row seat and a wine tour all rolled into one. I purchased one copy and found that this is that rare book that makes me log back on to Amazon and buy 10 more for gifts. So I did just that, and had to write this review. After all, that is what Amazon customer reviews are all about. Pick a Perfect Wine and a bottle of wine, and I think you have the perfect gift. The bottle brings instant gratification and the book brings lasting insight. This book is just that good and that entertaining.
Everyone loves a book that is loaded with personality. Anita LaRaia blows the stuffiness off the wine bottle, and tells us all the good stuff, the great stories, making us feel like we suddenly have the keys to a whole new world. It was such a fun read, and it was even more fun when I took the book into a wine store. I had people looking over my shoulder and following a few tips that we discovered standing there together. When I closed the book, I thought, "Pick a Perfect Wine, yes, but first Pick a Perfect Book." Here it is ~ you have found it. This is the first time I've given five stars ~ this book is just that good.

The best book in wine came to me as a gift

I received this book and a bottle of Banfi Rosa Regale as a gift, and loved both the book and this wonderful wine sooooo much, that I have just ordered a full case and books to match, to bundle together for gifts of my own. Where else can you get such a perfect taste adventure as Rosa Regale (such a WOW of a wine, that I can't wait to try ALL of the suggestions in this book ) paired with such a fun read?
I loaned the book to my sister, who is raising four kids and not exactly at a place in her life to be cruising wine tastings, and she said, "This book makes me want to start drinking wine." Well, when I handed her a taste of the Rosa Regale that came with it, she let out the biggest WOW since the day she got word that her daughter got MVP on the High School Soccer team. No kidding. She called me a few days later to say that she just saw the Rosa Regale wine bottle in a photograph in a Bride's magazine.
I just thought I should come on here and write my own review, because I can't think of another $30 gift that is so memorable and experiential as Pick a Perfect Wine + one of her recommended wines. This book made me feel like I'm in the know & ready to roll as a hostess. There is nothing like having the inside tips to enjoy the good life, whether you are doing it on a budget or with the sky as your limit. This book is a winner.
