WHY NICO ....WHY?!
By Customer
"Adversary Volume X1" by S.W. Frank continues the Alfonzo saga. This action pack drama is well written, as is expected of S.W.Frank, whose prolific writing style should be mandatory for college creative writing classes. Ms. Frank has the ability to take her readers on the journey, visualizing every scene, as though one were a director guiding students in the art of cinematography.
First and foremost, I would like to thank Ms. Frank for resolving all violent conflict in "Adversary Volume X1" by the end of the novel because another cliff hanger would have been unbearable and over-kill.**Spoiler Alert** That being said, I have to take issue with the turn of events with the matter of the heart in this novel. I was disappointed with the turn of events, namely with "one" Nicola Serana whose duplicitous behavior has already caused the death of his brother. Nicola or Nico as he is often called continues to be the "cad". I do not understand or see the need for this constant disrespect of Ari, who is his wife, she honestly deserves better.
I had previously forgiven Nico for his past transgression with Selange, but now I simply don't know what he can do to get back in my good graces, I have lost all respect for him. In my opinion, his current actions reek of disgust.
Ms. Frank might opine this is just art imitating life, but my response would be, I am a firm believer in the old adage "the pen is mightier than the sword", therefore; I do not want the pen to WRITE the ilks of society, but I do want the pen to RIGHT the ilks of society. I believe there are some serial philanderers who would even find having a relationship with such close family members as off-putting. Obviously Nico has no respect for boundaries.
Not only does he mis-behave, but he is always claiming "soul mate" status with his conquest. This need of his to find a kindred spirit is quite repugnant. If his duties as enforcer and protector are being over-whelmed by his demons, then maybe it is time for him to hang up his holster and leave the job to a younger man?! Even assassins have some type of redeemable quality, however in my opinion; Nico is losing purchase real fast.
Based on the richness and fluency of the writing and Ms. Frank's ability to still hold court after her 11th installment of this novel, "Adversary Volume X1" is definitely deserving of five stars. Did I agree with the turn of events, absolutely Not, but I did not like the fact that Romeo and Juliet died either; yet, Shakespeare is a genius and "Romeo and Juliet" is a classic. S.W.Frank, I continue to tip my hat to your writing acumen, and I am looking forward to the day that you can turn Nico back into a semblance of respectability in my eyes. "Adversary Volume X1" is a MUST read that is worthy of one's time.

I Almost Gave It Only Three Stars
By Pensive Lady
I will begin by saying there will be some "spoilers" in this review. I almost gave it a 3 getting stumped on this whole Nico and Bianca "Circle" of the order deal. I don't get the justifications of the need for sex coupled with protection. It was a total turnoff. There were times in the book his behavior was being justified, but that part of the plot seemed so far fetched that I almost got hung up on it. During the first encounter from the initial call, I found myself searching through other books online cause I stopped reading the book! I surprised myself that I was that disgusted and I agree with some of the other reviewers that I teetered on wondering if I was going to continue reading the series.
But Guiseppe, Allie, and the love between Alfonzo and Selange helped me to eventually enjoy the book. Guiseppe's behavior you can understand, and his antics were not far fetched. Except he almost got me angry when he felt he wanted to punish Shonda, but Alfonzo put him in his place on that issue. At first Shonda's attitude started changing my thoughts of liking her character, but in the end when you understood why she acted the way she did and saw how she handled Guiseppe in the end, she stays on my list of enjoyable characters. All in all, I gave it 4 stars, subtracting one star because of the Nico infidelity/reasoning under the Circle of Protectors deal that almost made me give up the Alfonzo addiction. I can now say I look forward to reading the next installment.

Oh No, Not Again! ****Spoiler Alert****
By Charm
I liked the book, but I want to see growth in the characters. Alfonzo and Selange continue to grow from the mistakes of the past. I love that about this couple. But the behavior of Geo and Nico leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I feel Shanda's pain. The two men who should love and protect her (her father & Geo) continue to rip at her soul with their demands. She stood up for herself and she gets a big, "you go ,girl!" for having the courage to do so. She did it with her father to follow her heart and go to Geo, and she did it again when she left the man she loved because he wouldn't be faithful. But in the end, Geo recognized that his bad behavior has consequences, so now maybe his transformation can begin. Now Nico on the other hand, seems to make excuses for his whorish ways. I love reading about flawed characters, but I need to see growth. I need to see Ari step up, the way Shanda has and put her foot in Nico's arse! I need to see some young stud come in and rock her world and have Nico feel what it's like to have your heart ripped out by betrayal! I need Ari to be front and center for the next book and show Nico what happens when he violates her trust...again. Selange is learning to allow Alfonzo to help her with her demons. She turned to someone else once for that, and look what happened. She learned form her mistake. Nico, however continues to look elsewhere other than his wife, in dealing with his demons. First with Selange, now Bianca. I don't recall him ever allowing Ari the opportunity to see how tormented he is. Give your wife the opportunity to make you whole. Instead, he gives Ari only a piece of him. Now, his excuse with Bianca is that she is just like him, and understands what he goes through as a Protector. Yadda, yadda, yadda. I ain't buying it! "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy"....Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
