It's fun, has a few real new ideas and a lot of well thought out meta-physics.

I've enjoyed a lot of Jack Chalker's works, but the Well World series is my favorite. There is a bit of science and things do slow down in certain places in the story, but they don't stay that way for long. There's certainly a large amount of room for clergy and physicist alike to dis the book, but I like meta-philosophical/metaphysical books (Thomas Covenant series, The Gap... anything that asks what is 'ultimate reality'?) Some of the ideas presented here are old hat, but quite a few are neat twists on old hat. And that's the best anyone can expect. The technology is 'magic', no real depth to the explanations, but it really is more adventure than "hard science fiction". Is it for everyone? No. Is it a good book worth having multiple copies, just in case? Yup, and I do have 2 copies (1 to loan, 1 to hoard.) I like EE Doc Smith, Isaac Asimov, Alan Dean Foster, Ben Bova and others (just for comparison.)

One for the serious student only

If there were a contest to find the top scholar on Q today (however we might configure that contest), then John S Kloppenborg Verbin might well come out the champion. His thesis on Q is often found to be the thesis of choice for many scholars (particular those of North American or Jesus Seminar hue). Here we are presented with a prodigious book split into two parts, broadly historical and broadly ideological, about Q, the hypothetical (and so far completely non-material) source behind the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. I imagine that if you aren't prepared to make that scholarly jump to believe in Q then you won't be too interested in reading this book.
I basically liked this book - but then I am a graduate student in biblical studies and so already committed to being interested in technical studies about obscure "data" which fit into the narrow specialisms of today's biblical academy. What I'm saying is that this book will not have broad appeal since its VERY technical. That said, the discussions, particularly the ones on "The Q document and the Q people" and "Reading Q in the Galilee" I found to be stimulating explorations into the possible as regards Q and the sources for the sayings of Jesus. Perhaps that's all that such discussions can hope to be. Certainly any taking of this book's contents for the final word on the subject should be shelved: tomorrow will bring newer conclusions.
One point I really liked from this book was its emphasis and concentration on the social location of both Q's interpreters and also the writers/collaters and readers of the Q document itself. This "social" criticism of the Bible has been going on for a while now and this book continues that tradition admirably in exploring the links between Q and the Greco-Roman Cynics hypothesized of Galilee. Such questions are worthy of study and essential to an understanding of Q (should the hypothesis ever become so genuinely held that such theories attain more than their current provisional status).
In his introduction to the book the author writes that his offering is to be about Q "and the difference its existence makes". I think the offering of hypotheses like the ones this book offers about Q are valuable talking points and this book is another valuable addition to debates about Q.

Very similar to the actual MBE

I used PMBR in conjunction with Bar Bri to prep for the MBE questions. To pass the California bar, I spent a lot more time taking and reviewing the PMBR questions instead of the Bar Bri questions. Even when compared to the difficult Bar Bri questions, PMBR will better prepare you for the real MBE's difficulty and more obscure points of law that are tested.

This book is perfect o supplement my outlines for the bar. It covers almost all topics for each subject and presents the answers clearly. It also has caveats and very good outlines/graphs for each subject which to me is very helpful for memory retention. My only complain is that its too heavy so what I did was, I put three hole punches on my book so that I could just take a particular subject I'm working on that day. All in all, a great buy.

This excellent book can help teachers to understand their potential role as motivators of students in learning situations, and it helped me to better understand why students of all ages and abilities love to tackle difficult text in the three-step content-literacy-based classroom. Piquing the SEEKING drive in the pre-reading Motivation stage of the class leads to purposeful engaged reading in the Acquisition phase, and the subsequent higher-order thinking in the eXtension phase. Repeatedly experiencing the brain chemistry described in this book leads to the development of habits of mind that can lead to a lifetime of successful and enjoying learning experiences.

This is a great book to help guide you through your students minds

This is a great book to help guide you through your students minds. We (teachers) often remove ourselves from where the students are and how they think. This book goes through the brain processes and how you can apply concepts through those processes. I feel that it leans towards elementary ages, but is still very applicable to middle/secondary. It also leans towards constructivism (Vygotsky & Piaget) and application. A good read when you're struggling with attentiveness.

Gawain Jones is a Grandmaster and one of the UK's leading players. He's a regular in the England national team and was their most successful performer at the 2010 Chess Olympiad. He was awarded the individual silver medal playing top board at the 2006 European Club Championship.

how to beat the Sicilian defense

This is an excellent book. The first part is White lines with 3. Bb5. The last 1/3 is 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 and now since White cannot reasonably play 3. Bb5 the author gives 3. d3 in detail. His main line here is 3. d3 d5 4. Qe2!?. This line is not my "cup of tea" but the line is explained in detail and should score well for those taking the time to study this variation.

The 3.Bb5 lines are clearly explained. The whole book is very easy to read. The author has his own unique ideas scattered through the book.

There is nothing really "wrong" about this book except my own preferences against 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 e6 3. d3!? Actually I give it 4 1/2 stars.

An Anti-Sicilian repertoire based around 3.Bb5 and the KIA

This provides an anti-Sicilian repertoire for White based around White's 2.Nf3 and 3.Bb5, featuring the Moscow (if 2...d6), and Rossolimo (if 2...Nc6) Variations. It also covers the King's Indian Attack (KIA) if Black plays 2...e6. The strength of the book is Gawain Jones' lucid writing style and his detailed explanations. He is one of the best of a new generation of chess authors; one who actually makes an effort to clearly explain the thinking - the why's and the wherefore's - behind the moves and strategy, which is especially appreciated by those of us who have not yet added "Master" to our chess titles. If you are a chess enthusiast, I recommend to keep an eye out for other chess books by this author.

Must read if you spend over a week in Switzerland

This turned out to be an utterly fascinating book, and it explained quite a bit about Swiss behavior and culture. While I of course can't vouch for everything in the book, I've tested a lot of it by observation and questioning the natives, and it seems consistent with reality.
Switzerland turns out to have a number of unique characteristics that aren't obvious to the outsider. For example, the government consists of an extraordinarily complex nested set of committees with a rotating presidency. The author makes the case that virtually all Swiss institutions, including government at all levels, the church and major corporations, are strongly influenced by an 800-year tradition of committee organization. In spite of having the most stable government in Europe (which my Swiss co-workers do not dispute), Switzerland has one of the most malleable constitutions in the world (which my co-workers do dispute).
I'm personally fascinated by language issues, so I read ahead to that chapter before finishing the lengthy chapter on politics. Again, Switzerland is unique in its treatment of dialects, which have very different social implications and practices in the French, German, Italian, and Romansh areas. According to the author, the urban Swiss Germans gave serious consideration to aligning themselves with 'greater Germany' in the 19th century. This obviously did not take place, and one of the unique results is that the local versions of Schwyzer T��tsch (choose your spelling depending upon the valley you're in) are universally spoken without significant class variations. In other words, this chapter explains why the Italian Swiss are more likely to be comfortable in standard Italian, and the French Swiss are more comfortable in standard French, than the Swiss Germans are speaking standard German. As any outsider who speaks German is painfully aware, the Swiss Germans read and write standard German (Hochdeutsch), but generally prefer not to speak it.
Swiss seem more willing to discuss politics than religion, but the chapter on religion was enlightening. After all, Switzerland was at the heart of the reformation, with Zwingli in Z�ri and Calvin in Geneva. Again, the Swiss are unique among European countries in their treatment of religion and the extraordinary compromises they have made to allow the peaceful co-existence of roman catholicism and protestantism.
The Swiss military is, unsurprisingly at this point, another unique institution. Virtually the entire male population is expected to belong to the reserves for most of their working years, and they keep their weapons and ammunition in their homes. It was only recently that 52 year olds were no longer required to serve a short annual duty. I've found that the military intrudes regularly when you are working with the Swiss, so besides being interesting, the chapter on the Army is helpful in becoming more aware of some of the workplace dynamics.
How can a country with 4 different official languages have and maintain a common culture? What do the different regions have in common? Quite a bit, actually. Anyone who deals with the Swiss on a regular basis or spends over a week here would find this book a helpful start on building an understanding of Swiss institutions and culture. This would also be an excellent book for students doing cultural area studies of Europe or Switzerland. It is a good read, and anyone interested in contemporary Europe would enjoy it and find it educational.

The Bacterial Flagellum of Nation-States

Even if you had no prior curiousity about Switzerland, this book would pique your interest. The author's stated aim is to create a multidisciplinary narrative, in the tradition of the Enlightenment (Johnson, Gibbon), explaining...well..."Why Switzerland?" - i.e. how did Switzerland arise, persist, and come to be so aggressively ecclectic?

And the author has some work to do. Not unlike the 'bacterial flagellum,' Switzerland's spectacularly improbable emergence from the fabric of history could be invoked by creationists to support a 'design inference.' It is, to paraphrase Michael Behe, as though a 747 spontaneously assembled itself and took flight.

Of course, Steinberg's answer to "Why Switzerland?" is much more interesting than "God did it." It cannot be summarized, but involves grain prices, the halberd, high-altitude athletic training, cottage industry, credit and interest and William Tell. At the very least, it has something to teach us about federalism, decentralization, peaceful coexistence and martial virtue.

For me the most fascinating part of this was to see how resistance to the Hapsburgs and then Napolean created a culture of decentralized disorganization - the opposite of Absolutist/Enlightenment France. The Swiss come across like the Duke Boys of central Europe ("Someday the mountain might get'em but the law never will..."). But this culture of rebellion also stands in contrast to Germany's stark tradition of blood and soil reactionism. Napolean's influence on Germany sowed the seeds of the World Wars. In Switzerland it acted as a sort of positive selection pressure, perturbing Alpine society and provoking its organization into Alpine civilization.

This is a very dense book, with more obscure names and places than a Russian novel. Some independent reference material (i.e. map, Wikipedia) is useful to figure out just which Johann is which, and to distiguish the various mountain passes from one and other (passes being the primary geographical feature and navigational reference point for most of the nation's history). But a reader's close attention to this book will be very well repaid.

The style is lively and readable. It is highly recommended for anyone with an interest in the country, whether that interest is historical or contemporary.
