I don't really know much about Godzilla or care much about Japan -- I like Brad's voice

Have you ever tried to read any of Dogen's Shobogenzo? I have. A bunch of times, actually, and failed, and decided I was just hopelessly not the right person to be a zennie (though I practice in the Theravadan school, I try to keep up). But I follow Brad's blog, and even though I'm not exactly his target audience -- I was never into punk music, I don't really know much about Godzilla or care much about Japan -- I like Brad's voice. So I've been reading Don't Be a Jerk, and I love it, and I feel like I actually understand Dogen a tiny little bit. Note Carefully: this is NOT a translation -- it's a retelling, or a paraphrasing, of Dogen's first 20 or so Shobogenzo chapters. But Brad includes lots of commentary, including the Japanese kanji and other people's translations of difficult passages. And he also makes it very very fun to read some really difficult teachings. So where Nishijima (Brad's teacher) translates the last line of Genjo Koan as "Because the nature of air is to be ever present, the behavior of Buddhists makes the Earth manifest itself as gold, and ripens the Milky Way into delicious cheese." I have no idea what that means. Brad quotes Nishijima almost exactly, and then adds, "And everybody likes cheese, right? Except vegans. And even most of them like it. They just don't like how it's produced. Which I respect." If this kind of thing makes you laugh out loud, this is your book. If it makes you rage and roll your eyes, save your money.

I am pretty impressed and tickled by the whole thing. This book is just a brilliant interpretation. As he says, it is not meant as a line by line rewriting, and more of a quick thumb nail glimpse with a good bit of humor and fairly free interpretation. Nonetheless, Brad manages to convey the heart and sense of each passage. Just wonderful, a takes a kind of genius to pull this off. I think what he has done is just a blast and really funny too, while still being poignant and amazing.

I think it still helps that I am already pretty familiar with the standard English translations that he is playing off though, so It may still be a little hard to follow for folks not so familiar with Dogen pretty well (and hard to follow anyway even if you are because, well, Dogen is Dogen even when Bradicized). However, this book may still be one of the best first introductions to Dogen I can think of. I think the book is suited to anyone interested in Dogen, and easy reading overall, funny, insightful and amazing. He did his historical homework too and did a masterful job.

Parts are hilarious, including how he took all of Dogen's classical style poetry and made em cheezy rhymes!

I highly doubt I would have been interesting in reading Shobogenzo if it wasn't for this book. The paraphrasing is very readable and funny at times without losing its meaning or overall seriousness. After each paraphrasing, Brad discusses the passages in more depth and even why he chose certain words/phrases to paraphrase. He also discusses what other various translations have used for a particular passage. I found this book fascinating and will definitely read again.

Waste of your time and money! Lots of misinformation!

Just finished reading this book, well, a booklet with 17 pages, terribly written, with no references, lots of misspellings and gross scientific misconceptions, such as the assertion that Maca "relief cancer..." Relief, how do? It could prevent, which is not the case, but relief? Stay away, it appears to be a scheme!

Matthew N.O. Sadiku is professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Prairie View A&M University. He is the author of over 100 professional papers and fifteen books including Fundamentals of Electric Circuits, Metropolitan Area Networks, Numerical Techniques in electromagnetics, and Introduction to Broadband Communication Systems. His current research interests are numerical techniques in electromagnetics and computer communication networks. He is a registered professional engineer and a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

An Excellent EM reference book

I was looking for a very good EM reference book. I found this, and it's amazing. Mathematically rigorous, easy to understand, and very well written, this book covers EM from a to z, including transmission lines and antennas. The examples are great, too, because you can work them without the the author giving too much away in the answers but just enough. This is an excellent book for reference, since the chapters nearly stand alone. So, one can read one chapter about electrostatics or skip ahead to another about Faraday's law without getting lost in a tome-like textbook where the author tries too hard to blend together the chapters for fluidity and cohesion, like a novel when it's supposed to be a textbook. This book doesn't do that, and I love it for that. However, the organization of the material is very well thought-out and makes good sense. Get this book if you're struggling in an EM class or you want an excellent reference book to page through. I highly recommend it.

Great Book for Understanding EM

I have the second edition of Elements of Electromagnetics. This is the book I go to if I really want to understand an EM topic. I find that for understanding the derivations of the laws and formulas this book is the best that I have opened. I am reading Feynman's lectures on EM and often go to this book when I can't follow Feynman. I haven't found many errors in the text itself, but reading others comments it seems the answers to the problems are not always correct. Still, for a good understanding it would be hard to top Sadiku.

Don't buy the 3rd Edition

This book (3rd edition) is from hell. The TA who solved/wrote the problems in this book was clearly on crack. Not even the solutions manual can be trusted to have the right answer. This is one of the few books I've found where you would be better off without solutions, since so many of those given are completely and utterly wrong.
It is interesting to note that you sometimes have to look at the solutions manual to understand what the hell the problem is actually supposed to say.
This book teaches electromagnetics and baldness. The latter comes from tearing out ones hair looking for the problem in ones work that doesn't actually exist, but does exist in the solutions you are comparing your work to.
Two stars because the book functions nicely as a club and projectile.

This is also an AWESOME parenting book! I bought this book and the companion activities book. I am pursuing a career in speech-language pathology and I have a two-year-old son and am always looking for ways to be a better caregiver and mother. The most valuable thing this book has to offer is how the environmental, biological, physiological and emotional aspects of child development come together to form a child as she grows. It brings a complete whole-child view to the table and helps me as a parent and future caregiver look at children with an enhanced lens of wonder and amazement at the development of all children. This book brought both a new pattern of colors to add to my kaleidoscope of childhood development and a new way of making sense of everything all at the same time. It is SO important in this modern world of hustle-and-bustle to take the time to listen to what children are trying to tell us and this book shows you how........AND WHY. The activities book, of course, is an added bonus for which I will leave a separate review, but I strongly suggest reading (or at least skimming) this book first. It will give you context for what you are doing with children and help you learn why certain children will react differently to the same activity. It will help you appreciate those reactions and learn to help children become unique in their own ways because of those little clues and hints to their temperaments and personalities that most people will miss. As a secondary benefit for parents, I am able to better clue in to the details in my daycare about which I can comfortably ask questions. For those parents who have not yet found a daycare provider.......READ THIS BOOK! It will help you come up with a checklist of the things that are most important to you when looking for someone to care for and love your child as much as you do!

Joy sat, legs crossed primly, body stiff and tense, her stomach churning as nausea clutched at her. Across the desk, the powerful 32-year-old CEO of the Calle Corporation stared in disbelief. For what seemed an eternity, the silence stretched out before the man blinked, his mouth setting in an angry line. “Are you out of your mind Miss Reid?”, the words bitten out contemptuously, his dark eyes raking her with disdain. She swallowed, only managing to cling to her calm exterior by her very fingertips, her knees hidden under the table shaking violently. If he could see the way she quaked inside she thought, he would not look so stunned, praying for Ricco’s sake she could hold strong. The thought of him was the shot of courage she needed, Joy raising her small chin, eyes meeting the man across from her and nodding. “That is my offer Mr Calle... Take it or leave it”
The man leant forward, his fingers steepled together on the large, ornate and obviously expensive walnut desk, the thought that it no doubt cost more than she could earn in a year flitting through her mind, not sure why such a thing should register at a time like that.
His deep voice, the slightest hint of an accent making it strangely sexy, interrupted her musings, “So... Let me get this right. For the past six months you have been holding out selling your land... While I have been upping my offer…” Joy nodded in affirmation as he continued, “But now... You are prepared to sell at the ORIGINAL price... If I agree to be your boyfriend for some unknown period of time?”
When the offer was laid out like that even Joy could see how crazy it sounded, her insides knotting together even tighter, her voice almost a squeak, “Yes” Before her, Carig Calle shook his head, his eyes hard as slate and just as dark. “You are out of your mind Miss Reid. I will get your land by legal means if necessary. You are blocking a major development... One badly needed around here and I will win in the end... Even if the sale has to be court-ordered”
Joy gripped her bag tighter, staring back at the arrogant Spaniard, her tone harder now, her own eyes flashing back, the usually warm brown of them darkening. “Don’t threaten me Mr Calle. You might manage that eventually but we both know that you need to start this project in the next three months”, her head rising as she locked stares with the CEO, not aware how glorious she looked, Carig Calle frowning at the change in the little mouse who had walked in with her ridiculous demand only moments before. “I might not win... But I will cost you so much money in delayed building that even YOU will feel it Mr Calle”

Hot Ball of Lead

While this is certainly an erudite and illuminating exploration of J.M. Coetzee's literary catalog, it is misleading to call it an introduction. From the book's introduction to each section that is devoted to a particular novel Dominic Head's exploration is always based upon a comprehensive overview of all of Coetzee's work. He cannot talk about one novel without referencing the rest of the novels. Head's insight is dependent upon being intimately familiar with Coetzee's entire catalog. If you are not well versed in all his selections you will find yourself gleaning the left over crumbs of Head's wisdom about Coetzee and unable to participate fully in his astute observations. However if you're a sincere admirer of Coetzee's work you'll need some grounding to maximize your understanding of the sublime genius he has gifted the world in his novels. This is the most accessible and complete companion I have thus far been able to find.

Coetzee is an extraordinarily challenging author. When I read Disgrace, I was scarcely able to turn a page without having to look up a word or a South African cultural reference I was unfamiliar with. I find myself wrestling with the concepts and ideas put forth in Coetzee's work long after the novel is finished. I found The Lives of Animals amazing, but was confounded when it was placed in the larger context of Elizabeth Costello. I feel that Waiting For the Barbarians is the most important and densely layered, yet shortest novel ever written about imperialism. As fascinated as I am with Coetzee's work there is much in the way of cultural references that pass me by unawares. Additionally, Coetzee himself is such a well-read scholar that even the most voracious bibliophile might not catch all of his literary allusions without some assistance.

This "introduction" does unveil some of those references and concepts that may have alluded you on your first perusal of a particular novel, and I enjoyed reading it as a guide to Coetzee's work. In my opinion the two flaws with this collection are that it is not really an introduction as it claims for people new to Coetzee's work, and the very short length of the entire work, and in particular the sections devoted to each of the novels. There is a lot more room for discovery and discussion for each of the novels than what is covered in this collection, and in that sense it is truly an introduction.

If you have access to a online research libraries through a University, I would also suggest reading literary criticisms of Coetzee's works to further enhance your understanding and participate in the dialogue Coetzee initiates in his novels. I've found reading Coetzee to be like the Zen aphorism of "drinking a hot lead ball that you can neither swallow or spit out." And in that spirit, this collection is a kind of mental Alka Seltzer to aid in your intellectual digestion.

Detoxification Is The Key

I came across [...]Dr. Lawrence Wilson's book through an article titled: "Light Saunas and Tesla" in the ExtraOrdinary Technology magazine some time back and was very impressed with his no nonsense approach to Sauna therapy. The article highlighted a case history where, a strict dietary regiment, and the light Sauna stopped the progression of bone cancer!

One sensed that Dr. Wilson's primary goal above all was to first help us improve our health. I, could not help but, admire his efforts to self empower his patients and others with one of the most profound tools. His unique approach and ability to cut through the mumbo jumbo on Sauna therapy and provide an highly effective, if not the most effective, Sauna design and it's associated methodology readily into everyone's hand is exactly the kind of data that is central to the theme of my Share the Wealth site.

The beauty of the Sauna is that it off loads the liver and the kidneys from their endless duty of detoxification, this then allows them to rest and rebuild. This is particularly important if the kidneys and the liver are not working optimally. In addition there are certain substances, discussed in the book, that are excreted better in sweat. Hence, he first tested the efficacy the Sauna on himself thorough the use of hair analysis, the striking results of which are in the book, and subsequently used it on his patients. Try this kind of sauna, you will be very happy

OK, so our Naturapath recommended saunas for detoxification, and I set out to learn what I could about them. I purchased both this book and The Holistic Handbook of Sauna Therapy by Nenah Sylver, both of which I would recommend to anyone considering saunas for detox. They both have a lot of good information about detoxification, including other modalities that might be done in combination with saunas.

The major difference is that Dr. Wilson advocates for building Near Infrared Sauna with heat lamps, and Nenah Sylver promotes instead the Far Infrared Sauna type, which is much more common commercially. After reading both I was pretty confused, so I decided to try a sauna at our local spa type place. They had a readily available expensive and aggressively marketed Far Infrared Sauna, which both my teen daughter and I tried for about 20 minutes, to see if regular treatments there or purchasing such a sauna would make sense.

Well we got our answer - No! I brought a Tri-Field meter with us to measure the EMF pollution, as Dr. Wilson states that these types of sauna tend to be very bad in terms of EMF pollution. Well he was right, the meter read like we were standing right under a high tension power line, which just can't be good for detoxing. About an hour after the sauna my daughter and I both started feeling sick, even thought we had been careful to hydrate and replace electrolytes. She feel worse and worse and had to cancel her evening plans, and we both felt awful all the next day. I know some detox things are supposed to create a "healing crisis" that one ultimately benefits from, but this did not seem to be the case, we could not see any benefit at all and were discouraged.

Therefor I am quite skeptical now about the possible benefits of Far Infrared, which Dr. Wilson thinks will always have high EMF pollution. However in Nenah Sylver's website she mentions that she personally uses the Saunex sauna, which apparently is manufactured so as to produce very low EMFs. I would be interested in trying this sauna, however they cost over $3,000 and were not available anyway do to a manufacturing issue (Spring 2011). If they really do have the low EMF down it might be a great sauna though.

Next we tried the Near Infrared. This was a bit difficult to get started on a initially as I was intimidated by doing the electronics myself, which he give excellent plans for doing. If you are up for this up could really make yourself a very low cost sauna! He also on his website lists some very small companies that will make is type of sauna for you, in a variety of different set ups. But then I realized I did not really need to wire the heat bulbs together, I just needed to get 3-4 suitable heat lamps, a way to arrange them and plug them into a power strip. This was actually pretty easy. (He makes it clear that you do need to be careful to have some way to prevent contact with the bulbs, they do get hot enough to burn if touched.)

First I tried the sitting on a stool and rotating arrangement that he suggests, but that did not work great for me, I found it rather tiring. I found instead that a horizontal arrangement with the lamps on one side and turning over frequently in a lying down position worked much better for me. I got out the Tri-Field meter again and found just as he said that there is no EMF pollution with these lamps, great! And it is very easy to adjust the overall temperature by changing the area of enclosed space. Also, we have found it very lovey to play relaxation type of CD during the sauna (Musical Acupuncture by Janalea Hoffman is great!).

But the huge surprise has been how truly Wonderful these lamps feel. Right away I had a sense that the lamps were "feeding" my cells or something! It sounds crazy I know, but it really is the best feeling. My daughter has been feeling ill for some time, her first time in the sauna (low heat), I could barely get her out! She smiled and said, "This is the first time I have felt good in so long..." It is not just a mater of the heat, something about the quality of the light/heat is deeply nourishing. It does matter what kind of lamp you get, and I can't explain why, but having tried a variety of brands, some really are better, but my daughter and I quickly developed favorites. So experiment if you are so inclined, they are not that expensive. Dr. Wilson says something about how newer models some brands have the wrong kind for filament or something, on his website he says which ones he likes.

So now I love my morning sauna time, and am very grateful to this book for making such a low cost healing modality possible for us. We never feel sick after time with these wonderful lamps, but instead feel nurtured. In fact I was curious about what on earth could make it feel so great and found these studies on the benefits on Near Infrared light for mitochondrial energy level and wound healing and more. They were using light made by LEDs, which would not produce much heat I would think, but somehow this light really does "feed" us. Wish there were more studies on this, but these are really interesting.

A Need To Know Book

This book is a godsent to the population at large, most of whom would be at least moderately interested in maintaining and improving their health.

The "old" Finnish Sauna has been around for so long and its healing properties are somewhat understood by many but actual use of the Sauna is limited to a small section of the population in the Western world.

Women do not feel comfortable in the Finnish Sauna as temperatures run at about 100� C (212 Fahrenheit) and the extra padding of subcutaneous fat in the female means that a woman cannot deal with the external thermal stress as well as a man, making the Sauna a less than enjoyable experience.

Enter the Infrared Sauna. Lower temperature, much more detoxification through sweating and excretion of fat-soluble toxins and a feeling of comfort, like a nice warm summer day, plus the reduced technical requirements make this the Sauna of choice.

The author does an excellent job of explaining all there is to know, including simple, inexpensive ways to create your own Sauna from readily available materials, the book is a real treasury of factual, relevant information and I highly recommend it.

Following the book's instructions, I built my own infrared Sauna for very little money, it works well and my wife is amazed how clever I am.
