Horrible Book

This book is an example of a decent idea that's been poorly executed. Very, very bad editing with obscene grammatical errors that left me wondering if English is even the author's native language. Strange syntax, illogical ideas and poorly thought out sentences make reading difficult (I gave up at around 54%). Contains stale technology that is present in a myriad of much better books-nothing really original. All-in-all, this book is only really useful as an example of how NOT to write. By far, this is the worst book that I've ever purchased and I'd really like my money back.

A Rough Draft Published by Mistake

Beginning with the “Time Line”, I am convinced that the author is not well versed in geography, international affairs, alternative power initiatives, and the state of scientific advancement. I was constantly distracted by statements, that don’t ring true. I am sure that the book would make Neil deGrasse Tyson’s head spin. Getting the science right, IS important in science fiction.

The story drags with details that are unnecessary to move the plot forward. Orphan tangents had me searching back in the text to see if I missed something. It was very hard to not skim over long dialogs that comprises the bulk of the book.

The most glaring distraction throughout the book is the lack of editing that left too many incorrect words, punctuation errors and sentence fragments. A Composition 101 teacher would “make this text bleed.” A creative writing professor would advise the author to remove the unnecessary words and tangents that suck the life out of the story.

A nice rough draft, the story has potential but it has no business being offered for sale.

Covering creativity

What a loving tribute to Allen Lane, the visionary who founded Penguin Books in 1935. Few publishers have consistently put their best `face' forward year after year over thousands of titles and I find it surprising that this Penguin cover history hasn't been written before 2005.

Admittedly most of their covers until the Fifties, though distinctive in the three-tier horizontal design, were not that creative but things slowly changed no doubt because of market pressure from other paperback publishers. I thought Penguin covers really took of in 1962 with the use of Romek Marber's simple cover grid. Pages 104-5 in the book show eighteen brilliant covers using simple graphics with black, green and red inks. The grid cover style ran into the seventies with the non-fiction Pelicans and nicely still using everybody's favorite type: Helvetica.

Author Phil Baines has done a lot of research for the book though it is basically visual with excellent short text pieces for the various title genres. A nice touch is spread of forty-eight Penguin logos from 1935 to 2005 at the back of the book and it is this kind of editorial thoughtfulness that makes the book so interesting.

I picked this up because of the book's physical beauty, but I've just read it in one sitting, couldn't put it down--a fascinating window into 20th-century British cultural history as well as book design.

A fun look at Penguin book design over the decades

I enjoyed reading this book, which provides a heavily-illustrated history of Penguin book covers from 1935 to 2005. There are a lot of wonderful covers here. The original penguin logo was adorable. At the back of the book, there's a listing of the logos from over the years, and the first penguin is definitely my favorite.

It's great to look through and see covers from some books I have. There's a nice tactile quality to the design of this book that dovetails nicely with the subject at hand.

My only complaint is that the side notes in the useful chapters on the history of Penguin are in orange and are hard to read. I get why they chose orange, but that doesn't help my eyes to read it. But that's a minor point.

A neat, fun read on Penguin's own history and British design more broadly.

SAN ANTONIO, June 9, 2001 ? The Text and Academic Authors Association awarded "Fundamentals of Materials Science and Engineering: An Interactive Text", by William D. Callister, Jr., the 2001 Textbook Excellence Award (Texty) during the association's awards banquet. The book is published by John Wiley & Sons. Among judges' comments: "This book appears to be much better than the text I used in college. The figures are nicely done, and a second color is used effectively. The text is clearly written and well-designed.
A superior textbook on materials. Many outstanding illustrations. The inclusion of ceramics and polymers is a plus for modern engineers."

TAA created the Textbook Excellence Award in 1992 to recognize current textbooks and learning materials. To be nomiated, a work must carry a copyright date for the previous or current year. Entries are not limited to books but may include learning materials of all mediums.

The Text and Academic Authors Association was established in 1987 for people interested in developing and publishing all kinds of educational materials, including textbooks, software, videos, monographs, reference books, newsletters, multimedia CD-ROM disks and others. TAA represents text and academic authors in matters involving them, including taxes, copyright and better appreciation of their work within academe. About the Author
William D. Callister is currently an adjunct professor in the Department of Engineering at the University of Utah. Maybe it hit me at just the right time, but I really enjoyed this collection of observations about the 90's. Incisive musical commentary, and great tie-ins to modern trends. The homage to Philip Roth sealed the deal.

Excellent & Interesting Book, even if you don't like Smashing Pumpkins

This was a very interesting sociological analysis of American mainstream culture from the early 1990s to now, with a particular emphasis on music's place in that culture. The uniqueness of the all-too-short grunge era is placed within a larger context of history (both American and musical) and a greater understanding of what led to it is thereby accomplished. Admittedly - as some other reviewers have pointed out - the author's love of Smashing Pumpkins is extreme, so if you like that band a lot you will definitely enjoy reading about them here. And even if you don't like them you can just skip a few paragraphs and you'll be fine. Some of the high points of this book for me were:

- an eye-opening side-by-side comparison of the release patterns of Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana [let me just say they have far more in common than you realize]

- a hilarious and spot-on examination of the authenticity of the nerdiness of the members of Weezer versus The Presidents of the United States of America

- an intelligently expounded theory on why chefs are essentially the rockstars of today

Regarding this last point, have you ever wondered why food culture and subculture is so prevalent now? Why there are seemingly a gazillion "options" for any particular foodstuff you want to buy? Why there are now people who call themselves "foodies"? Why modern day "rockstars" are basically chefs on Food Network rather than being actual rock stars on MTV? Well . . . this book goes a long way toward answering these and other questions.

Definitely a well-written and interesting read, especially for anyone who lived through the early nineties. I highly recommend it!

This was a fantastic read. If you're an upper-stage millenial/cusper/whatever you want to call yourself other than what your are, which is OLD, then Craft is right in your wheelhouse. He appears to be the leading voice among the emerging early 80s class of "when I was your age" nostalgia junkies, and I love every minute of it. Side note - can I buy that quinoa button with Amazon prime?

Good ideas, but needs more exemplars to help teachers use the rubrics.

I think this book will be helpful as science teachers transition to the content literacy requirements of the common core, as well as the new requirements of the next generation science standards. That said, I believe that the book needs more example responses to help teachers not used to grading writing clarify their ideas about how to use rubrics and the like.

This book typically gives one sample answer for each activity, but it would be helpful to at least include a high, middle and low response. Without a range of example responses, getting started with this type of activity seems much more daunting.

Over-all, it is a useful book, but could be even more helpful with more example answers.

THE BOOK STARTS OFF GREAT WITH A DATA BASED ACTIVITY ON BIRDS. HOWEVER, THERE ARE TOO MANY ACTIVITIES THAT ARE MORE LIKE LABS. FOR EXAMPLE, THE SECTION HOMINID EVOLUTION EXPECTS YOU TO SUPPLY THE SKULLS (VERY EXPENSIVE). OTHER SECTIONS LIKE "REFUTATIONAL WRITING" ARE ESSENTIALLY INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO WRITE AND EVALUATE ESSAYS (EX. "MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT LIFE ON EARTH"). SOME REFERENCE ARE GIVEN, BUT NO ORIGINAL DATA FOR STUDENTS TO CONSIDER OR USE. IT WAS A LET DOWN FOR ME, AS I WANTED TO GET INVOLVED IN USING DATA BASED PROBLEMS THAT LET STUDENTS ANALYZE REAL DATA AND FORMULATE CONCLUSIONS. THE BOOK IS WELL WRITTEN, WITH MANY EXAMPLES, BUT DID NOT MEET MY NEEDS.

Rabbi David Cooper is a real spiritual giant.

I have followed Rabbi David Cooper teachings long before there was this kabbalah fashion initiated by Madonna, I find that Cooper is sincere, profoundly spiritual and extremely deep.
He can comunicate profound spiritual truths, he can explain things that not even an Angel could explain to us (and believe me: I am not exagerating), things that we know are there, but, being territory of the soul, very seldom surface on our conscious intellects.
Well, Rabbi Cooper can put his finger right on the spot and explain with crystal clarity what is the exact mechanism that is initiating a certain phenomena in our spiritual universe.
With these meditations, which I find SUPERB, superior in every sense to those that Yehuda Berg has taught us (Yehuda Berg is Madonna's guru, so to speak) with these meditations, I was saying, you will easily learn means to investigate your soul and to communicate with the universe, in a profound and even fun way. The messages that you get in return, and you WILL get messages believe me, are very revealing, they will provide clarity to your inner journey and will help you immensely, by improving the very quality of your life: your mind will be less polluted, your inner self will be more still and strong.
By the way: I had the honor to speak on the phone with Rabbi Cooper, about 15 years ago: he has the voice of child, he gives me the impression to be a very pure man, a man with an oceanic heart, a true spiritual giant, even if his humility is as great as his soul.

This was so very informative in helping me understand how I was creating my own havoc in my life. Now I really try to think about situatiions before I react to them instinctly. And all around pople notice me and I seem to be more approachable.......Wonderful Wake Up to changing my life for better in every way.

First Borrowed Now Mine

This is a book that I first borrowed from a friend. I have grown up as a Christian, but sometimes didn't have answers for some of the questions asked about my faith. These were questions that I knew the answer to myself, but didn't really know how to explain it to others. This book went into detail about all kinds of topics with supporting evidence about all the topics. It was a book I wanted to write in and make notes, however, I couldn't because it was borrowed. Now I own a copy to be able to write in and use as a reference. My husband is a youth minister and the topics in the book I believe will help our youth grow in their Christian walk and to help them become more confident in understanding the big question of "Why".
Topics include why I believe in: the Bible, God, creation, heaven, hell, moral absolutes, virgin birth, Christ, reserrection, Christianity, second birth, Holy Spirity, and the return of Christ.
