A Delightful Overview of Christian Spirituality.

In this paperback of 150 pages Bradley Holt, professor of Religion at Augsburg College, Minneapolis provides a brief and clear overview of Christian spirituality through the centuries. It is written in a textbook style without any theological jargon or presumption of previous knowledge. Since it is intended for college students each chapter includes discussion questions, exercises, aids for exercises and a list of suggested readings. The book also provides at the end a glossary of difficult words, end notes of each chapter, a common bibliography, an index of names and another of subjects.
It is written in an ecumenical style without any prejudice against any denomination or sect of Christianity. The book is multicultural in the sense that it includes the approaches to spirituality in various cultures outside the West, namely Africa, Latin America and Asia. Just like the people of color, the women too get a good representation in the book. A delightful book of this sort was long overdue.

YOUR THIRST IS OVER

If you are thirsting for a comprehensive and historical overview of christian spirituality then this book is for you. Thirsty for God is a concise traveler's guide into the history of Christian spirituality. It examines the expression of spirituality in the Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Protestant traditions and is inclusive of Christian spirituality's expressions from non-western cultures.
The text is accessibile to the reader. It is free from theological jargon and enables you to engage the ideas. Holt asserts that spirituality is to be lived. In looking at the richness of these varied traditions you can a better appreciation of the faith. Holt also suggests that we need a spirituality that addresses our times and is free from the distortions from previous generations. Enjoy this great work which will certainly quench your spiritual thirst.

The Title Says It All

I purchased this book for an Introduction to Spirituality course. I learned a great deal from it. I started by assuming that Spirituality referred to ways of praying and mysticism. "Thirsty for God" taught me that Spirituality really refers to how we live out our faith in God. So a history of how different traditions developed and how they each express their faith in God makes sense and this is what Bradely Holt's book is about. A few times, Roman Catholic beliefs were misrepresented, but that was very few and far between. The book is an excellent overview of the History of the Christian Church and how the Church prays. It is easily readable by any High School graduate.

Motivational Book --- a MUST READ!

After attending Ryan Beale's book launch in Royal Oak, Michigan. I was so intrigued to read this book. I have been participating in my own personal journey of trying to post less on Facebook and really try to do more inner work on myself. This book is obviously not just about Facebook - it is so much more! The more I read, the more inspired I was to post less on Facebook and actually do some in-person or phone catch ups with people that I would have normally just communicated with them via Facebook. I believe this book is the start of something REALLY BIG. As a recent social work graduate, I have been watching the recent trends of the school shootings and believe now more than ever it truly takes a village to raise a child. Gaining more insight on our own personal journey really has the positive impact we need to rebuild ourselves, family and community. I want to thank Ryan for sharing his unbelievable journey with us. It was brave and honest. It is not easy to share such personal pain and to be so open about it. He is courageous and smart for opening up - and I hope that when others read this book, they are inspired to look inward and focus on what really matters. Inner happiness. This is a MUST READ and I feel so honored to know both Ryan and his wife, Louise and hopefully to help Ryan get involved with some work at the ADL to get into our educational programming and get more people talking about mental health.

A light, yet deep, insightful and meaningful read

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this well-written book by Ryan G. Beale. Having personal experience with family mental health issues, I could relate to much of the many points and suggestions!

This book is approximately 1/2 autobiography and 1/2 self-help book. Mr. Beale narrates the book in 1st person, revealing his perceptions, reactions and interpretations to his older brother's challenges with various addictions. He also analyzes today's "social media" usage as a diversionary tactic meant to avoid experiencing emotions and having true interpersonal relationships.

Fourty Days off Facebook contains references to various effective therapy techniques including: journaling, blogging (via his "Chattertree" site), sharing with others in the same "boat" and more. Last, but not least, it is a book meant to help the reader get in touch with one's internal, unspoken, yet very real feelings and aspirations. The last 40 pages of the book serve to assist the reader in doing this.

Bravo! to Ryan G. Beale! He has exploded onto the literary scene with an amazing, wonderful, productive, triumphant and super beginning! HE IS HERE TO STAY! I await his grandiose projects that are yet to be created!

Amazing Book!!

The title intrigued me since I am not a true believer of Facebook myself, but after reading the book in just a few hours I was so delighted with the amazing insight. What a wonderful emotional journey, this book took me to places in my heart and mind and left me with much to think about. I think this book is so helpful to remind us the importance of real connections with the people in our lives and not just using social media to accomplish those connections. Looking forward to more insight from this author! Thank you for bringing this very important message to the public and thank you for sharing your personal journey with us all!

The planning and time frame is quite extensive and Townsend outlines the strategy, the development of plans and how to engage the right people in order to be successful.

This is a great book which I recommend to anyone serious about making partner in a Big 4 firm. The process of going from individual executor and fee earner with high chargeable targets to sourcing and executing your own client portfolio isn't always easy or transparent. This book gives practical, honest advice about how to go about making this transition.

Really talks about change

When I bought this book I thought it would just be talking in the air about change and everything we basically know. Well to my surprise it was well structured and adressed the various academic history in way that you could follow. Of course this remains very useful for academic studies, but still puts things into prespective.
