The book you hold in your hands is part ofNational Instruments and Prentice Hall PTR's Virtual Instrumentation series, covering the toolbox and function library IMAQ™ Vision, the IMAQ Vision Builder, and the NI Vision Builder for Automated Inspection,which are used for image processing, image analysis, andmachine vision. It is intended for engineers and professionals, as well as for students, who want to take their first steps in the fields of image processing.

Today, many engineers have a lot of experience with LabVIEW™, mostly with data acquisition (DAQ); so they can now also use this tool for their image processing or machine vision tasks. In this book, I have tried to combine the image processing and analysis functions with a basic knowledge of imaging fundamentals, like image generation, image transport, image storage, and image compression. Although I know that not all of the tasks my readers have to deal with require this knowledge, these sections may be a reference for later use.

Some statements on the requirements for the exercises and the examples: you need a LabVIEW version 6.0 or higher; actually, I wrote all of the exercises with a 6.0 (or 6i) version (which is obvious especially in the diagram screen shots), but all of them are tested with 6.1 as well. I cannot give any guarantee that the LabVIEW and IMAQ Vision programs (VIs) work with version 5 or lower (especially the ones from the CD-ROM will not; but if you program them yourself, they may). You can download an evaluation version of LabVIEW from .

Additionally, you need, of course, National Instruments' IMAQ Vision toolbox. Unfortunately, no evaluation version of IMAQ Vision is available (only a multimedia demo), so you have to buy it. The IMAQ Vision multimedia demo is part of the attached CD. By the way, do not confuse the IMAQ Vision toolbox with NI IMAQ, which contains the most important imaging drivers and is part of any LabVIEW installation.

Very good tools for most imaging tasks are IMAQ Vision Builder and NI Vision Builder for Automated Inspection (NI Vision Builder AI). The IMAQ Vision Builder helps you build image processing and analysis applications by constructing a script file and converting it into LabVIEW and IMAQ Vision programs. We will use the IMAQ Vision Builder in some of our exercises because in some cases it is easier to get quick and reliable results, although it is possible to program all of those exercises in LabVIEW and IMAQ Vision as well.

While I was just writing the (what I thought) final lines of this preface, National Instruments released a new tool, the NI Vision Builder for Automated Inspection (NI Vision Builder AI). This stand-alone software makes it even easier to set up and run simple machine vision applications; you do not even have to have LabVIEW installed on your system. We will discuss the Vision Builder AI in Chapter 1, although it will not be used for the exercises. You can find an evaluation version of Vision Builder AI on the CD-ROM. (Please read more about the attached CD in About the CD-ROM at the end of this book.)

This book does not cover all IMAQ Vision functions, especially not all utility functions like image management and manipulation VIs. The reason is that I do not want to provide a second IMAQ Vision User Manual. The User Manual is excellent, and it seems to make more sense to me to focus on some interesting and useful functions, which are explained in the book's examples. Moreover, this book is not a guide to good and structured LabVIEW programming; some exercises are definitely not good examples. For instance, most exercises in Chapters 4 and 5 open an image and an image workspace but do not close them, which really hurts a good programmer who learned to write structured software. The reason for not closing the image itself is that the image remains on the desktop and the results are visible. Also, if you do not close the workspace, the image is not corrupted by other open windows of the operating system.

Alas, the book was oversold..

The general feeling I had after reading the book was that of a disappointment. Overloaded with handbook information on image encoding, compression algorithms etc., the book lacked substance in vision algorithm applications. Expanded IMAQ manual it is, a good book on applications of IMAQ vision algorithms it is not.
Espessially disappointing was section on DICOM: whole 4 pages with 2 pages of illustration, promulgating third party software, with not much to offer.
The book describes what image analysis algorithms do to image; it does not give hints when we want to use/try what algorithm.
It appeared to me the author was more concerned with money making than with writing a decent text.
The book can be probably useful for the very beginners, as a substitution for poorly written IMAQ manual. Again, then they should not worry of a minor issue of $70 price tag..

As lawyers who advise technology companies we try to be familiar with the technology and products our clients use. We do not buy many technical books, but we wanted this one because of the legal implications in image processing. We found the book to be a very useful guide and to be written in language that, while not "simple," gave us a clear and succinct, practical view into and understanding of the technology and products.

Best available generally.

Fair technically. Some of it is already obsolete but it is the best there is on the subject of spread spectrum in my opinnion. There are some typographical errors and some errors that employ statistical probability poorly. This book should get reviewed by Nate Silver...because in many cases it looks more optimistically at minimum discernable signals. There are probably better research papers about spread spectrum usage to be found from IEEE and propriety telephone company manuals...but the Dixon books still do at least present geneal and historical information that is correct.

The best starting point for in depth knowledge

Great place to start in the getting up to speed on SS systems. Concise and clear. However, you will need to go further a feild if you need to delve into the shift register sequences and CDMA is not discussed very well. (i.e. no mention of walsh/hadamard coding etc.) Have designed systems just using this book.

With these words, in The Cost of Discipleship, Dietrich Bonhoeffer gave powerful voice to the millions of Christians who believe personal sacrifice is an essential component of faith. Bonhoeffer, a German Lutheran pastor and theologian, was an exemplar of sacrificial faith: he opposed the Nazis from the first and was eventually imprisoned in Buchenwald and hung by the Gestapo in 1945. The Cost of Discipleship, first published in German in 1937, was Bonhoeffer's answer to the questions, "What did Jesus mean to say to us? What is his will for us to-day?" Bonhoeffer's answers are rooted in Lutheran grace and derived from Christian scripture (almost a third of the book consists of an extended meditation on the Sermon on the Mount). The book builds to a stunning conclusion: its closing chapter, "The Image of Christ," describes the believer's spiritual life as participation in Christ's incarnation, with a rare and epigrammatic confidence: "Through fellowship and communion with the incarnate Lord," Bonhoeffer writes, "we recover our true humanity, and at the same time we are delivered from that individualism which is the consequence of sin, and retrieve our solidarity with the whole human race." --Michael Joseph Gross

Without a doubt, the book that has most changed my life is Dietrich Bonhoeffer's The Cost of Discipleship. It is incredible. I first read it at Bible college and then read it again three years ago. Bonhoeffer writes about cheap grace - how we can make the gospel what people want to hear so that we get a bigger response- and how we must fight against that. As an evangelist, I can sometimes feel the temptation to give a softer message to get more people responding, but actually we need to be true to the message that belongs to God. Revisiting the Sermon on the Mount

Being a believer for over 30 years, I have read innumerable books which are related to discipleship and spiritual growth. I would count this as one of the most important; as borne out by the overall importance given to this 20th century classic.

Speaking as a man who truly lived out his faith under the worst of circumstances, Dietrich Bonhoeffer does so with a mantle of authority. The bulk of The Cost of Discipleship is devoted to reclaiming the rightful authority of the Sermon on the Mount, and by extension, the teaching of the Gospels, in the life of the believer.

Throughout Christianity today, the Sermon on the Mount is often presented in a certain context; that is, that it was given under the dispensation of the Old Testament prior to the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. The purpose was not so much to instruct Christian living, but in its extremity to reveal the utter hopelessness to live it out, and hence to point the sinner to the cross of Christ to receive forgiveness in Him. While this is partially true, Bonhoeffer's argument is that believers are no less bound to take the Sermon on the Mount and the Gospels to heart to live them out every moment of every day to the greatest extent possible.

Bonhoeffer distinguishes between easy grace and costly grace--easy grace being the belief that, because Christ has paid for our sins on the cross, which He has, that the believer need no longer be overly concerned with conforming His life to the hard sayings of Jesus in the Gospels; on the contrary, costly grace, by virtue of our understanding of what it cost Christ, should motivate us even further to go further in Christ and to live out.a life which is worthy of what has been given to us.

I would particularly recommend this to believers who have been in the faith for a while; for whom perhaps the Sermon on the Mount and the New Testament teachings of Jesus in the Gospel have perhaps become "old hat." Such believers will be challenged afresh to measure their lives and fruit against the standard of Christ.

Every American Christian should read this book and take what it says to heart. Unlike a lot of modern theological books that are written by people sitting in air conditioned offices that have never paid a price for their belief in Jesus, this book was written by a man that eventually and voluntarily gave up his life for the cause of Christ. As a person, who myself has faced persecution and arrest in anti-christ countries as a missionary, I can attest to the validity of the core message of this book.

The idea that God loves you too much to let you suffer, is about the most blasphemous and false doctrine to ever permeate the Christian church. It is especially rampant in the United States of America where preachers preach the false doctrine of self gratification, self indulgent Christianity where God is reduced to genie in a bottle that you can rub with the write words (faith formulas) and get anything you want. Where salvation and lavish prosperity is taught as a birthright because you were lucky enough to be born in the the country of America, and because of this God loves you more then any other race in the world and would never consider letting you suffer even the slightest bit.

The Cost of Discipleship will open your eyes to the truth about what is necessary to truly follow the "real" God of the Bible. An omniscient, omnipotent creator who deserves to be worshiped and served. A God who deserves to be followed by His creation that loves Him above all else and trust Him and respects His decrees more then their own opinions, culture or traditions. A God who requires His followers to honor Him as King in their lives and to be patriotic to His kingdom more then their own countries.

How theologically Bonhoeffer could refuse the law of “the world”, the Nazis laws

Fortunately, I could finally finished reading this book, which is called one of the most important theological books of the 20c, and a modern theological classic. It required approximately two months for me to finish because of my English ability and theological knowledge, but needless to say it was worth the time and cost to examine.

Even in the terrible oppression under the Nazi German government, Dietrich Bonhoeffer did not give up his faith with no fear of being killed. He is apprised as an “Apostle of the modern era” and a “defender of Western civilization”. Through this book, I had been kept seeking his core theological source of conviction which enabled him to keep his faith so resiliently: Unfortunately, the conviction lead him to his death of the young age 39. From this book, I could successfully recognize Bonhoeffer’s rigid ideological foundation that made it possible for him to be killed by a capital death of hanging, as a martyr. I found that he thought it is not only the Christian’s right but duty to protest the government which is against God’s law, righteousness or providence.

Needless to say, on the premise that he was a Lutheran pastor, his logic and ethics are elaborated with these words such as “only the Bible”, “Grace alone”, “faith alone”, “the mystery of Incarnation”, and the “theology of Cross”. However, I paid attention to the logical point that how theologically he could make possible to refuse the law of “the world”, the law “on the earth”. Even though those laws and the Nazi government itself had occurred legally in a democratic regime and had legitimacy, he could deny it because of the reason that God’s law is superior to laws “on the earth”.

Bonhoeffer proved theologically the superiority of God’s law than the law of the world with criticism on “leagalism”, the concept of Christ as a “Mediator”, criticism on the Reformers who justify and admits nations’ the right of revenge, criticism on some Protestant denomination who has theology that confuse Christ’s love and patriotism (p.152). Bonhoeffer’s theology depends on fine exegesis or interpretation of scriptures. In fact, we can find at least some evidence that his theology is breaching Lutheran authentic “doctrine of two kingdoms”, i.e. the mutual non-aggression between religion and states. Although it would not be completely denied the doctrine of separation of religion and states, we are able to recognize these phrases as a clue to breach the doctrine: For instance, “The law must be broken for the sake of Jesus; it forfeits all rights if it acts as a barrier to discipleship (p.61)”, Bonhoeffer wrote, “No law of the world can interfere with this fellowship (p.257)”, “They live their own life under alien rulers and alien laws (p.296)”, “Jesus, the champion of the true law, must suffer at the hands of the champions of the false law (p.121)”. From this point of view, we can find the reason of “the evil law is not a law”, in other words, he breached the dogma that “a law is a law, however undesirable it may be”. Laws on the earth are valid only if those are not against the will of Jesus, that is to say God’s law. Jesus “alone understands the nature of the law as God’s law (p.122)”. Apparently this logic is the base what enables Bonhoeffer to protest Nazi Germany and its laws.

Then, if that is the case, on what ethical ground or virtue should we human beings live “in the world”. In Bonhoeffer’s theology, the corner stone of ethics is based on the Lutheran notion of “Pecca fortiter”, i.e. Sin Boldly: Human beings must recognize deeply his weakness, incompleteness, and sinfulness, and then we may be compensated if we completely rely on Omnipotent Father God and Christ as the Mediator. According to Bonhoeffer, Christians need to follow Jesus’ life and death, and to obey his teaching, that means realization of God’s Word. And they should put “beatitudes” into practice in “the Body of Christ” namely in the Church, in the Christian community.

When Christians take the Sermon on the mount into practice, they need to be the Beatitudes; the poor, the person who mourn, the meek, the person who suffer from hunger and thirst, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peace makers, the person who are persecuted for righteous sake. Only through this practice, they can become disciples of Christ. If they could practice, simply to do this discipleship on the world, i.e. in daily life, with love of fellowship, they could be “salt of the earth” and they could be able to express their extraordinariness or peculiarity without intention. Bonhoeffer argues that this extraordinariness is the realization of the law of God, and Christian peculiarity will come out in their proclamation, which means manifest of God’s law. The righteousness of God can never be contributed back to “Justica Civils” i.e. laws of citizen, and therefore Christians shall be persecuted as strangers in the secular world. Nevertheless, just in the midst of the persecution, Christians must show the divinity of the righteousness of God. Therefore he wrote it down not only once that the death in martyrdom is the supreme grace for Christians who follows Jesus’ life and want to be imitative of Jesus’ death on the Cross.

From above, we can confirm the base conceptions of Dietrich Bonhoeffer: First, for Christian, God’s law exceeds law on the world. Second, Christians are separated from the secular world and must show their divinity and extraordinariness in the daily life by practicing beatitudes. Third, the death of s martyr is the supreme gift which a few of Christians are given. I guess if he had not these theological conceptions, Bonhoeffer could not get the triumph of martyrdom under the cruel Nazi government.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was born in 1906. He learned theology in Tuebingen University and became a lecturer of the University of Berlin when he was only 24 years old. Then he studied at the Union theological Seminary in New York. Reckless of danger, in 1935 he started protesting against the German Christian Movement that spread rapidly in Germany together with the prosperity of Nazional Sozialisms. He accused it as an Antichrist ideology. He reported to his friends in Britain and the US the truth and facts of German Church Struggle between the Deutchen Kristen and the Confession Church, and as a leader of the Confession Church movement, he also taught underground at an illegal Church Training College. When the assassination plan for Adolf Hitler comes to surface, Bonhoeffer was arrested by Gestapo, as one of the suspects on April 5th in 1943. On April 9th in 1945, he was killed by hanging through SS chief Heinlich Himmler’s order. It was only few weeks before the day when Berlin was freed by the Soviet Union Red Army.

About the Author
Jean Marie Basset is Research Director at CNRS and Director of the Laboratory of Surface Organometallic Chemistry at CPE in Lyon. He received many awards including the grand prix (Prix Sue-1997) of the French Chemical society, the Max Planck Award in Germany, and the IFP Award of the French Academy of Sciences (1998). He is the author of 472 publications, 45 patents and is a member of the French Academy of Sciences and of the French Academy of Technologies as well of the Europan Academy of Sciences. His research interests are mostly centered in the field of Surface Organometallic Chemistry.

Rinaldo Psaro is Director of the CNR Institute of Molecular Science and Technologies, Milano Italy. The general scientific interest is the development of new methods for the preparation of more efficient and eco-compatible catalytic systems for fine chemicals and commodities, to achieve higher performances, simpler preparation methods, conditions allowing for extended recycling. Author or co-author of 3 international patents and 162 papers on international journals on the field of surface organometallic chemistry, catalyst characterisation and heterogeneous catalysis.

Dominique Roberto is Full Professor of General and Inorganic Chemistry at the Milan University. Author of 81 publications on highly qualified journals, her current research interests cover molecular engineering and nanoorganization of coordination and organometallic compounds with luminescent or non-linear optical properties, coordination complexes for solar cell application, and surface organometallic chemistry. For her research, she received the "Flavio Bonati" (1996) and the "Federchimica-per un futuro intelligente" (1998) awards.

Renato Ugo is Full Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at Milan University. He received many awards including the Gold medal of the President of the Italian Republic for advancement in science (2000) and the Pino medal (2006). President of the Italian Association of Industrial Research, he is a member of the "Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei". He is author of ca 250 publications on highly qualified journals in the field of coordination chemistry, catalysis, surface organometallic chemistry, and recently nonlinear optics.

This ambitious book paints a fresh picture of American culture a century ago and finds there the confused stirrings of our own age. Rauchway's lens opens on the 1901 assassination of President William McKinley by Leon Czolgosz and keeps that event in focus throughout. The author's aim is to get us to understand in new ways the dawning 20th century, when so many of our present political and social struggles took form and solutions were proposed. For instance, the involvement in Czolgosz's case of "alienists" and criminologists provides Rauchway (The Refuge of Affections) with openings into such varied issues as nativism, racism, industrial conditions and social work. As for politics, he deals skillfully with now mostly forgotten issues-such as tariffs and currency policy-that rarely appeal to readers, but which here gain clarity through Rauchway's deft brevity. Most important, he shows how the nation's culture, and Theodore Roosevelt, who gained the presidency on McKinley's death, got caught up in a debate about the reasons for the murder. Was Czolgosz spurred by his psychological state or by anarchist ideology? Did the murder's origins lie within the assassin or in the social conditions that produce desperate people? These are issues that continue to divide Americans. And the book shines in dealing with them, making an important contribution to historical understanding. Rauchway's explanation for Roosevelt's 1912 loss as "Bull Moose" candidate of the Progressive Party-that he was caught between opposing interpretations of the roots of the nation's ills-is especially provocative. That alone should make the book controversial.

Justice moved swiftly in 1901, dispatching the assassin of William McKinley a few short weeks after the crime. Rauchway wonders if the motives of the killer, self-proclaimed anarchist Leon Czolgosz, were sufficiently investigated. For factual backbone, Rauchway relies on evidence gathered by one Vernon Briggs, a psychologist who interviewed the Czolgosz family and was sensitive to explaining aberrant behavior in terms of social conditions. And there was much to be sensitive about in late 1890s America, whether one was a stand-pat capitalist or a protesting proletarian: Rauchway works the fears and demands of both archetypes into his interpretation of the politics of the Progressive Era. Czolgosz serves as the author's vehicle for taking his narrative in many directions, such as immigration, industrialization and poverty, concepts of race as enunciated by Theodore Roosevelt, and more. Ultimately offering a theory of Czolgosz's motive, Rauchway presents an interpretive narrative best suited to readers with at least a TR biography under their belts. Gilbert Taylor

The Forgotten Assasination

While President McKinley's assasination (and as Rauchway would argue, even his legacy) is much forgotten today, this book reminds the reader that its impact on American politics is no less dramatic than the assasinations of Lincoln and Kennedy. Czolgosz (the assasin), by murdering McKinley, directly paved the way for Theodore Roosevelt's entrance into the White House, and from there the first modern progressive president was born.

Rauchway makes interesting obersvations about the social inequalities of the turn of the century, the moral decay in American cities, the rise of anarchism, the growing fusion of big businesses and politics, and an outdated legal system struggling to catch up with medical advancement.

Lastly, the book made me draw comparisions between the fear of anarchists that enveloped the nation after McKinley's assasination in September 1901, and the fear of terrorists after 9/11, exactly 100 years later. Overall, this is a great read for anyone interested in history, law or criminal psychology.

The Murder of a President and the Rise of the Prog. Party

This is an interesting book just for the examination of the assassination of President McKinley. Rauchway details the shooting of McKinley and the aftermath. The aftermath was the trial and execution of Leon Czolgosz, the war on anarchism and the rise of the Progressives (Roosevelt and Wilson). During this short book, I read of the history of the social and political movement at the turn of the last century. The political legacy was of conservative Republicans allied with big business and capital, with an arch conservative judicial system.

McKinley's assassination caused the rise of a different force in the Republican Party. Roosevelt made the Progressives respectable and caused changes in the political process which modernized the political, social, and economic landscape. The final portion deals with the assassination attempt on Roosevelt in 1912 which was a reaction to all that Roosevelt accomplished. The assassination of McKinley focused negative press on the Anarchists, and the attempt in 1912 was a reaction to the Progressive policies of 1912.

This is a good read. The only criticism I have is that this book focuses much attention on the human element of one assassin.

A Changing America

The assassination of William McKinley is far less examined than those of Lincoln and Kennedy. If only for the relative obscurity of the topic alone, this deserves a look. While somewhat disappointing for a lack of focus, the book is quite informative.

The author's thesis seems to be that the assassination of McKinley was symbolic of America's discontent with conservativism and big business's hold on politics, bringing about the progressive movement and the emergence of Theodore Roosevelt. The title of the book would seem to imply a focus on the assassination of McKinley, which is not accurate. Make no mistake about it, the title of the book is deceiving. Rauchway goes for several pages at a time examining nothing but the rise of Roosevelt. In that respect, the author strays from delivering what the title of the book suggests and at times from supporting his apparent thesis.

One of the issues the book does a reasonable job of addressing is the story behind McKinley's assassin, Leon Czolgosz. Alienist Vernon Briggs investigated the life of Czolgosz only to find the powerful businesses that McKinley shielded were a key part of the environment that created the assassin. In the process of his investigation, Briggs brings the issue of the insanity defense to the attention of the American justice system. In this respect, Briggs's research had a major impact on the judicial system.

Without the significant digressions into the social changes brought about by the Roosevelt administration, this book would be much thinner. Perhaps that is why Rauchway chose to include it. Even with the digressions, the book is decidedly thin. I enjoyed the book even though I believe it could have been composed with a much better sense of focus.

This Book Saved Me from the Siren Song of the 60's

Isn't that an odd thing to say about a book whose title starts with the word "sex?"

Well, around 1964 one of my parents brought this book home, although neither of them would ever confess to the deed. Whoever it was, they did me a big favor. When the folks weren't watching, I swiped the book and devoured it in a single long sitting.

Helen Gurley Brown should have entitled this masterwork "All the Hard-Nosed Things that Young Women in the So-Called Pre-Feminist Era Need to Know about Money, Career, Independence, Women's Rights, and The Way Things Unfortunately Are. And Oh Yes, Sex. That." However, the book would undoubtedly have sold fewer copies if the title had truly reflected the contents, so it's just as well they hyped the sex part.

Under the impression that I was going to get to read some really naughty stuff, I studied Brown's book with the intensity I would later reserve for pre-calculus. Brown was the friendly, more experienced adult ("Aunt Helen," I liked to think of her) who cut the BS and told you how it really was with respect to a number of important subjects, often contradicting the messages of the dominant 60's culture, as it materialized later in the decade.

Money? Girl, Woodstock or not, you will need it when you are no longer "pristinely young," so get a career and earn it. You will appreciate the freedom and self-respect it brings you. Do the very best you can with whatever abilities you have and the education you can get, and the rewards will carry you through the inevitable bad times that everybody faces. Beauty? Even if you are gorgeous, don't put all your eggs in that basket, because your beauty will fade, and then where will you be if that's the only card you ever played? Love? It is NOT all you need, no matter what the Beatles say. Marriage? Fine, fabulous (Brown herself has been married over forty years), but don't pin all your reasons for living - or your financial survival -- on a guy. Guys are just fallible human beings. Don't give up your ability to stand on your own two feet when you fall in love, because there are no guarantees in life, ever. As Brown eloquently put it, in middle age (or at any time before) a man can leave a woman "like dishes in the sink" if he wants to badly enough. Exercise and a healthy diet? Essential to self-respect. Property ownership (or at least having a fine apartment)? Also essential, particularly when you get older; living in a garage apartment furnished with orange crates is cute when you're twenty, but pathetic when you're forty.

I came of age in the late 60's and early 70's, when the culture was telling us to tune in, turn on, and drop out. Don't conform, don't join the establishment, don't become the man or the woman in the gray flannel suit, don't throw away your life working and forget to smell the roses. Follow your dreams and the universe will magically provide.

This was good advice as far as it went. It sounded so great, and it really was well meant and idealistic and heartfelt...if only it had been true. Unfortunately, it should have been taken with a small but healthy dose of skepticism. Such as, yes, do follow your dreams, but along the way learn some marketable skills, okay? However, the cultural mindset discouraged us from planning for the future, or thinking seriously about money, financial issues, and practical things. We might have known with our minds that the Woodstock generation would eventually get much, much older, but we didn't believe it.

I, however, had Aunt Helen whispering in my ear, so around age thirty I finally rolled up my sleeves, quit hanging out in Austin drinking dark beer and swimming in Barton Springs, and got an advanced degree and a good job -- but did plan things so I still had some time to smell the roses. I couldn't have done it without her advice. At the end of the day, although Brown was not considered a "real" feminist, and in fact came in for a great deal of scorn on that account, she helped me every bit as much as the rest of them.

She wasn't into rhetoric, ideology, or internecine wars with the sisters, she just gave good hardheaded advice about the way things were, like it or not, that's city hall so just deal with it. She liked men. They were people, they had their problems, but generally they were pretty nice. This was quite a relief to those of us who liked them too, even though there were times when it wasn't politically correct to dwell on it. She just didn't believe that liking men required her to give up everything else worthwhile in life, or her ability to provide for herself.

Yeah yeah, like just about everybody else I take issue with her rather Darwinian attitude about carrying on with married men. However, as the writer Molly Ivins would say, she had the guts to tell young women how the cow ate the cabbage. I honor her for that.

Life changing event

I bought this book recently just because it is the book I that changed my life. I read it originally when it was first published. I was a recent high school graduate in a steel town culture in Western Pennsylvania. I read it and my whole approach to life changed. I went to collage (first one in my family), became successful in the technology world (only one in my family), ended up in New York city (well I regard this as a benefit). None of these things (as well as all the side effects that came with them) would have happened if I had not read this book. I don't know if it would have that impact on today's teenagers, but I bought it again in 2014 on the occasion of my retirement to see what it could have said to trigger all these events.

a bit dated, but entertaining view into the world of women (mad men style) back in the 60's, 70's. surprisingly accurate advice back then about healthy eating and nutrition--that has been since confirmed by science and 50 years of experience.

Lois Daykin is a very successful knitwear designer whose designs are regularly featured in the prestigious Rowan magazine. She is the author of some of their best-selling pattern booklets, including Little Treasures. Baby Crochet, along with Baby Knits, is her first book to be published in the United States. She lives in Derbyshire, UK.

Cute accessories, great gifts

This book is packed with cute projects for small items -- from teddy bear slippers to toys to room accessories. Though it has one cute wrap sweater and some hats, it's basically features a set of big and colorful building blocks, bibs, pillow and blanket, bottle covers, a big stripy snake toy, and room decor such as a string of hearts and a storage pot cover.

These would be great small projects for a baby shower. As in the author's book Baby Knits, all the yarns used are by the English company Rowan. These are available in the US, but may be hard to find. The US standards for yarn sizes aren't included, so knowing how to substitute may be difficult. You'll need to make gauge
swatches to determine what yarn works best.

I have a baby boy and have been trying to find baby pattern books that have a lot of patterns that would be appropriate for a boy and this book delivers. Most of the patterns in this book can be used for a boy or a girl and there are many unique toys. I'm very pleased with this book and cannot wait to start crocheting some lovely things for my tiny guy.
