Great source! Excellent biblical guidance for church worship.

This is a terrific book for guiding one around the idols that a large crowd of people receive into their musical worship today. This book provides a clear and thorough bible study on the subject of music in the church. It offers a clear historical lesson on how men have changed the church worship over time. There is some overkill regarding the writings and opinions of some historically religious men. The section explaining the arguments for instruments in Christian worship became argumentative and repetitive in its counterpoints. I also felt that the section on the psychology of worship was not necessary. There are large groups of Christians worshiping today using only a capella singing. The author failed to point this out which leaves the persuaded reader feeling a little lonely. I enjoyed this book as I found that I was keeping my Bible close as I turned to it frequently. This book may be a tough pill to swallow for most people, but this is nothing new regarding God's authority since the beginning of time. The "old light" of this book is basically that - God's authority.

Wonderful Study on Music In The Church

I really was amazed reading this book. About 2 years ago I read a review in the Gospel Advocate and put it on my wishlist. Finally, I got to read it. The number of references the author uses is amazing! A lot of time was put into researching. It truely made me appreciate why our church does not use musical instruments and I wouldn't have it any other way. I applaud the chapters on keeping unity in the church when trying to steer churches to elimiating instruments in worship. Unity in the church is so important and I am grateful the author didn't leave this out. If you are wanting an awesome Bible study on instrumental musical in worship, this is for you. If your church currently uses instruments and you feel comfortable worshiping this way, read this book with an open mind. One of the best quiet time Bible studies I've had in a long time.

Good For Beginners Only

To the Beginner: Get this book. Go from chapter to chapter. Work your way through this book and master the material especially sections 1 and 2. Become so proficient in this material that you can go from any chord to any other chord in a nano second. These are the basic fundamentals of guitar playing.

Ok- now to the review of the book. This is a pretty good book. It is well organized. A beginning guitar student could start with this book with absolutely no prior knowledge or experience. In fact, I can't think of a better book for a beginning guitar student to start with. The book teaches the open position chords, barre chords, the blues shuffle, hammer ons and pull offs, staccato, palm muting, arpeggio picking, 7th chords, 9th chords, sus chords, and basic rhythms. It has a lot of illustrations and a music CD with example tracks.

Only a little basic music theory is discussed. It's a good introduction and enough to tweek the interest of someone who might be interested in it, but it's not too much so someone who just wants to learn where to put their fingers on the fretboard can ignore it if they want to.

But it's only for beginners. Title suggests that the book is for beginner to advanced students. This is misleading. This book is for beginner students only. If you consider yourself an intermediate or advanced guitar student, then don't get this book.

Probably all of this material is available in one form or another via free lessons on the internet. Nevertheless, this book organizes the material so that a beginner can learn the fundamentals and not miss anything.

Finally, this book does not cover everything. There is still a lot to learn even at the beginner level. It does not cover a lot of territory that a modern rhythm guitar player should know. Triads are not covered. Power chords are not mentioned. Power chords. Please! I can't comprehend why the authors of this book decided to not include power chords. I mean come on! But despite these short-comings, it's still an excellent book for a beginner.

this book is good for those who are just beginning

An older book (pub. 1979), this book is good for those who are just beginning, and it continues to advanced. I ordered it to help fill me in those areas where I'm lacking, to refresh other areas, and, basically, to keep as a constant reference, along with my Progressive books on Guitar Chords, and Jazz.

Excellent learning material.

I can't say enought positive things about this book/cd set. It introduces rhythm patterns and counts in an easily understandable format. It teaches styles applicable to all forms of guitar, including the common rhythms of jazz, country, ragae, and rock. The CD has helped my ability to follow complex rhythm and pick patters immensely. The CD is very user friendly. As an added bonus, I discovered the guitar track is on the right channel, so you can turn it off and play with the drum sequence. The ability to play with the drum tracks has helped my timing greatly and has been a great break from the metronome. The book explains as much theory as you need in order to understand what you are doing, but no more, which I really appreciated. Too many of the music books I have used previously either ignore theory totally or bog you down with it. For children, I would expect a 9 or 10 year old to be able to use this program well, so long as they know the basic chords and are able to make basic changes.
I would recommend basic familiarity with chords before using this book. It provides diagrams of the chords but immediatly begins presenting rhythm patterns, so you should be familiar with the basic fingerings. This book was worth the money just for the alternate chord fingerings which facillitate rapid chord changes.
This is a very general book, but the company puts out several geared to specific types of music, which I hope to progress to shortly.

About the Author
Kevin M Shipp was one of the most widely experienced officers in the CIA, occupying positions as an Agent on the Protective Detail of the Director and Deputy Director of the CIA, a manager of ongoing operations, an internal Security Officer, a Counterintelligence investigator tasked to ferret moles out of the CIA, a Counter Terrorism Center officer, a protective operations team leader and a polygraph examiner. No other CIA officer has successfully held so many sensitive positions in the Agency. He is the recipient of two CIA Meritorious Unit Citations, a CIA Medallion and three CIA Exceptional Performance Awards. He acted as the Program Manager and Lead Instructor for the global Department of State, Diplomatic Security, Anti Terrorism Assistance Program. He currently lives in Tampa, Florida and is the President of Ascent Protection, Training and Intelligence, LLC; an anti terrorism, executive protection and security organization.

Despite several warm reviews for this book, I was disappointed in it. There just wasn't much substance or specifics. Overall it was a quick read in 120 something pages, just not worth $25.

I have had the honor of being trained by Mr. Kevin Shipp and he is the real deal. A quick review of his biography and that is clear. His integrity is second to none and his ability to share stories from his perspective on events that will be in history books is truly remarkable. Have you have ever wanted to know what REALLY goes on inside the CIA? Get the facts from someone with integrity who has been there. Don’t just take my word for it, look at who endorsed book, or better read the book and decide for yourself.
