Joshua S. Goldstein, is an associate of the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University and a leading expert on war. His books include "International Relations and War and Gender: How Gender Shapes the War System and Vice Versa". He lives in Amherst, MA.

Jon C. Pevehouse is Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin. He has published in journals such as the American Political Science Review, the American Journal of Political Science, International Organization, the Journal of Politics and the Journal of Conflict Resolution.

Great Introductory Text

This is probably the best International Relations (IR) text out there, and it is a good one too! IR is a hybrid and consequently very large field comprised of myriad sub-fields intersecting at various angles. This book makes sense of this confusion, and does so in an intellectually rigorous fashion.
The book is divided into two parts: International Security and International Political Economy. The chapters in these parts introduce the reader to such concepts as power politics, international law, trade, the environment, and the North-South Gap, to name a few.
It is a difficult task to sum up the entire field of IR, and Goldstein does not do this. I'm not sure it can be done. But what Goldstein does do is provide the introductory student with a solid grasp of the fundamentals of IR so that s/he can have a solid foundation from which to launch further inquiries.

Too Expensive

As a prof, I used this book in my intro IR course for many years. After not teaching the course for four years, I went to order it for this Fall, and found it cost 120 bucks. I just can't bring myself to do this to the students. The book is excellent, but not worth the price. I will not be assigning it.

WAY too expensive

I've TA'd for this class for 2 years now, and the publishers have just spiked the price. There's no reason that this 150-page book should cost more than $30. This is exploitation, pure and simple. Professors please do not assign this book.

Update: When I took this class, I paid $5 for a used copy of the 5th edition. Now you can get older editions for $0.01. As long as you're comfortable with a little insecurity, I'd almost recommend buying an older edition and saving yourself $100. They're virtually the same thing, just without a picture of Psy on the front.

The Best Translation of Fujita Currently Available in English

Fujita was the last Koga Ryu master, and stated that he would take all the teachings to the grave with him when he died, so there are no modern students or teachers of Koga lineage left from who to learn about this unique style. For the person who would still like to learn as much as is possible about the art historically, from the words of an authentic master, the ONLY option is to read Fujita's works. There are simply no other accredited sources, and to access the sources that do exist, one must either be completely fluent in Japanese, or get your hands on a reliable translation.

THIS is the best translation of Fujita's work currently available in English. It is written in a clear concise manner, and perhaps most importantly, it does not vary from the original or contradict Fujita's statement about Koga Ryu ending with him. I own many manuals on Ninjutsu, both historical and modern, fictional and fact, in Japanese and English, and rarely do I find one that can be compared side by side to its' original source material. This is such a work.

Don Roley is certified as a Japanese translator at the highest levels the Japanese test for, and it shows in his work on this volume. In addition to excellent language skills, Mr.Roley has extensive personal experience in Japanese Martial Arts, so brings both a deep personal understanding of the culture as well as the warrior mindset. Perhaps most important to me, he also very clearly confirms Fujita's statement about the end of Koga Ryu - this is important as there are many unscrupulous people who are still to this day trying to claim connection to Fujita's system, and who author flawed or false works to profit from that deception.

To summarize, if you want a unique, entertaining and accurate glimpse into the mind and writing of a true ninjutsu master, you must buy this translation of Fujita's work.

This book is a translation of a work by Fujita Seiko which seems to demonstrate how ninjutsu can be adapted to be useful in the modern world. Through reading this work you can gain a glimpse of Fujita Seiko's ninjutsu as well as a sense of his practicality; for example, he talks about how useful flashlights are and the advantages of them over torches. After reading this text I gained the impression that Fujita Seiko believed that ninjutsu was able to modernize its methods to remain relevant in the world. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in ninjutsu, Japanese history, or military history. this book is a manual on ninjutsu and therefore would not be very suitable for readers who are looking to be entertained by a story.

This translation of a masterful piece of writing on the martial arts by skilled martial artist and highly experienced Japanese translator Don Roley is a fantastic read for any student of the martial arts, and of course most particularly ninjutsu. The historical value in this work, the last master of Koga-ryu Ninjutsu's writings is immeasurable as well, and unless you can read Japanese, such work is only as good as it's translator and Roley has done excellent work here.

Teaming With Nutrients...how plants eat and what to feed them. We all learn about cation exchange capacity, CEC, but that always ends up as a discussion of how the soil particle holds nutrients. It never really explains how plants actually take up nutrients, ie how they eat. And, what about these nutrients once they get inside the plant? What happens to them?

This second Teaming book is a trip� that delves into the cellular biology of plants in the same way Teaming With Microbes was a book that starred microbiology. This is, at least to me, a fascinating voyage that requires some chemistry and botany, too, but stars cellular biology. Don't worry, the learning is fun and fascinating and I make it easy. In the end you will know how plants eat and, of course, what to feed them. It is not all biology and botany. Teaming contains the practical advice you need feed your plants properly and organically.

Just read it!

"Just read it" is Lowenfels advice in the Introduction to "Teaming with Nutrients" and I second that.

Any gardener who has thought about how their plants actually eat the food we presume we are providing, will want to make time to read and think about "Teaming with Nutrients."

Not to ruin the ending for you, but here's a spoiler alert: We don't provide their food. Just as they have done for millions of years, plants can and do feed themselves. However, we gardeners can interfere with their ability to feed themselves by causing problems for them. Understanding their complexities is like gaining a deeper understanding of the people we want to know - we can give them more of what they need and avoid the practices that can do them harm.

Topics covered include: Plant cell parts, the basic chemistry involved in plant nutrients, the botany of nutrient-usage by plant tissues/organs, the 17-essential elements (macronutrients and micronutrients), how water moves through the soil and into the plant stems and leaves, nutrient movement within plants, how to apply the science you just learned to your gardening practices, and, recommended fertilizer recipes.

As a non-science major, I found the book challenging to read. As a gardener who is fascinated by the wonder of plants, I found the challenge worth my effort. If you, like me, are not a scientist and are not up-to-date on the latest cellular biology discoveries, you will thank Lowenfels many times for the useful 5-page Glossary in the back.

Your awe of plants and the lives they lead will increase if you "just read it" and you'll never garden the same old way again.

Tough read

This is PhD level information.
This is not a gardeners quick read.
Purchase Jeff's other book instead. I love "Teaming with Microbes" It is a must read for EVERYONE, not just gardeners. I purchased this book because microbes was such a great read. This book is a significantly slower read, but provides you with more information than you can handle. Microbes was a fascinating book that I have read cover to cover 2x and constantly refer to. I recommend Microbes to all my friends. This one is just too slow and difficult to read and there isn't enough practical information for the common gardener.
Microbes should be distributed throughout America and on every dirt worshiping friends gift list.

Hot enough to make the corn pop in the field, causing the hound dog to turn blue (because he thought it was snow, of course) and hot enough so that an unfortunate flock of geese that flew through it came out the other side, all plucked, roasted, and stuffed. Enter the narrator, a quick-thinking young girl whose big brother Hank used to tease that "girls could never be farmers." Her solutions are even more far-fetched than the roasted flock of geese: she bakes a huge loaf of bread to lure in the crows with their great fanning wings; and, when that doesn't work, she plants lettuce to cool the air. Iceberg lettuce. The bold illustrations are incredibly clear and lively and contribute significantly to each scene's general disarray and commotion. Using acrylic, oil, and colored pencils, Goto has created full-page panoramas balanced on the same fine line between reality and fantasy as the story. When a passing heat wave gets snagged on the barn's weather vane, strange things start happening: the mercury blasts out of the porch thermometer like a rocket; a flock of geese flies in one side of the stalled heat wave and emerges from the other plucked, stuffed, and roasted; Ma's flowers pull themselves up by their roots and flee into the shade. And--well, you get the idea; though the story ostensibly takes place in Kansas, it's clearly Tall Tale Country we're visiting, instead. It's finally up to a plucky young farm girl to save the day with an ingenious scheme involving produce (lettuce give credit where credit's due!). Ketteman (Bubba, the Cowboy Prince, p. 1646, etc.) repeats herself in this pack of lies fashioned into a Kansas-style tall tale. Just as Beanie was not up to the job (``too young'') in the author's 1993 tale, The Year of No More Corn, the narrator in this story has been told by her brother that girls can't be farmers. Once again there's a heat wave, once again the corn pops off the stalk. In the other book, chickens laid hard-boiled eggs; in this one the cows jump around on the hot ground so much that their milk turns to butter. That's not the end of the tall tales, which come to a close only after the narrator thinks to plant iceberg lettuce to cool the place down. Goto's eye-popping, thermometer-busting illustrations are perfectly matched to the story's exaggerated dimensions; weird angles and brash colors give the fields and farm a parched look ideal for the antics in the foreground--even though those antics are too familiar. Fun and amusing

My four-year-old has requested this for one of his bedtime stories for over one week running. The story itself is a humourous tall tale about a farm in Kansas. The illustrations are hilarious, and the expressions on the characters (including the farm animals) are expressive and funny. A great children's book, but wacky enough to make adults laugh, too.

Again terrific illustrations in a children's book. The colors are dynamic and the silliness will grab your attention on every page. The author takes the impossible (only skips a few steps in each process)to make things happen! The ending is a surprise and could only come from Kansas!

Believe it or not, I use this book as a read-aloud for my 8th grade (13 year olds!) science class. I read it to them before beginning a unit on weather. Even this age finds it humorous. Add this to your collection!

Seemed stilted- I didn't love the main characters; hate books in a series. Just want a standalone book

*** This book is one of three in a series. You can read it as a standalone, but it has a bit of an abrupt ending. Author is leaving it open. They get together at the end, but it's not a true HEA. Too many issues left to resolve. No 'cliffhanger', but definitely not completely closure***

Alayna "Laynie" Withers has just graduated from NYU's Business School with her MBA. She works as a bartender in a nightclub with hopes to work her way up to becoming a part-owner of the club. She meets an incredibly sexy, arrogant/confident Hudson Pierce who has just purchased her nightclub.
He propositions her to be his pretend girlfriend in order to get his suffocating mother off of his back.
This book takes them through their pretend relationship that eventually ends up to be a real relationship.
Throughout the book, various issues drop from the sky. Both of them have emotional and clinical challenges. Laynie has major fixation issues - has actually had a restraining order that was put on her. She dates, then becomes obsessed by the relationship. She has been and is still in therapy and working on these issues.
Hudson has his own set of issues that he has been working on as well (do not want to spoil it here).
Other issues include childhood friend - is she a friend, or does she want Hudson to herself.
Crazy mean socialite mother.

In addition to their own issues (which resulted from loss of love from parent(s)), there are a host of other characters that add to the spice of this story. Ex-girlfriends, ex-boyfriends, catty, pretentious and snobby people, cold-hearted mother, sweet sister, flirty dad, etc. They are all unique and interesting.

But overall, I could only give this book 3 stars. I loved the IDEA of the plot. Two people who are struggling to overcome their clinical challenges. But I really didn't find myself rooting for either one of them.

Yes - Laynie has an overprotective, angry big brother. But he was forced to raise her since the death of their parents. He is paying for her apartment! He has had to put up with her obsessive behavior for a very long time! She is a bartender at a nightclub with an MBA. He is trying to push her to get a better paying job instead of leaning on him so much. There really isn't anything wrong with that. But she freaks out on him and then shuts him out??? That seems so spoiled and bratty to me. It's not cheap to rent an apartment in NYC. Why is she acting like he is being selfish - she needs to re-evaluate her attitude.

And Hudson...he is supposed to be 27 or 28 years old and President of a billion dollar corporation? Are you kidding me. I know he's the son of the previous President. yes - there are one or two 'kids' in silicon valley that are running billion dollar companies- but they are ones that came out of no where that grew really quickly. This is an old established company. It's like having a kid take over Apple or Microsoft. Also, he speaks like a 60 year old man. Stilted. He also kept calling Laynie 'precious'. All I could hear was Gollum's hissy voice (from The Hobbit) saying "precioussssss" over and over again. Ugh.
An example of how stilted Hudson speaks : Laynie has a bit of a lapse in her stalking and finally tells him that he never responded to her text (the first she ever sent to him...). It's a big emotional moment for Laynie since she is putting herself out there emotionally. And his response? "I didn't realize it was important to you. I'll make a better effort to respond in the future." And that was his super sweet emotional response. Huh? Stilted.

I loved how Laynie stands up for herself with his mother and other judgmental people.

The sex scenes are super steamy hot. Quite a few of them as well.

I just can't do three books of this. Since I didn't love the characters, I didn't want to invest myself in three books of this angst.
She stresses too much over their relationship (does he love me? is he pretending to like me? is he telling the truth? am I worth it? did he sleep with her?) Her personality changes so much, I was getting whip lash. one moment she is cocky and telling his mother off - the next she is crying because she thinks he doesn't want to sleep with her. She can be confused, but the tears come really quickly. If she is going to be strong, then be strong.

Hudson does something kinda rude to her towards the end of the book. But he doesn't profusely apologize, nor does she tell him what he SHOULD have done. Leave a very nice note. But the way he did it was rude and hurtful. And yet he gets away with it? Ugh. It was annoying.

He is supposed to be super rich sexy alpha-male, but it wasn't sexy to me.
Laynie is super smart - why didn't she find herself an amazing internship with companies that run nightclubs or help to build them etc. Why was bar tending her only option? She is selling herself short. I think she is close in age to Hudson, yet she acts 10 times younger with questioning her business ethics and challenges when he makes suggestions to her.
At one point she actually helps him with something - if she is that smart (can pick up someone's business productions from one spreadsheet), then she is brilliant and that made me wonder again - why is she so unsure of herself?

Again, there were too many issues left unresolved for this to be a HEA - stand alone book.
I felt like Laynie still didn't have enough resolved to be on her own. Nor ready to start a real relationship with a dominant man like Hudson.
I really wanted to like this book more.

I can see how people liked this book. But I just couldn't over the issues I listed above.

The book first intrigued me by the cover! HOT!!! So I decided to buy it. I know you shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover, but I need a good cover before I will even begin to think about buying the book.

The book starts out with Alayna working at a bar and a “suit” (Hudson) sitting at the end of the bar staring at her.
We find out that the bar has been sold to a new owner, but they focus on Alayna graduating with her MBA instead. The “suit” leaves her with the change from the $100 bill that he paid for his one drink with and congratulates her. Come to find out, the “suit”, he owns the bar. He is her new boss and all she can think about what’s beneath the “suit.”

As the book progresses, you become aware that these two could not be further from the truth. She is poor; he is rich. She is about love to an extreme; he is about playing women to an extreme. These two could not be more wrong for each other.

But as with most books, they think they can change each other. Hudson is supposed to be entering into a loveless/arranged marriage and he refuses, so he buys her fake “love” to show his family that he needs to terminate the arranged marriage. But you guessed it…. They fall in “love” along the way. However, neither one knows what a healthy relationship is……… (and their current relationship is not healthy either).

I enjoyed the secondary characters more than the primary characters. His dad is warm, charming, charismatic and funny. His mom is snarky, abrasive, and downright unpleasant. Her brother is annoying, controlling and manipulative. I enjoyed these characters over the others because I felt like their relationships had depth to them (even if they were neurotic). I felt as though the main character’s relationship was not developed outside of sex. Sure a relationship can start with sex, but they end the story on the couple becoming an actual couple instead of a fake couple. To be honest, I’m just not feeling any depth to their relationship. Yeah, they give each other what the never had: positive regard and support, but that does not give me as a reader the depth of a relationship that I’m looking for in my main characters.

However, the series is not over yet. So we will have to wait and see how the story progresses.

Not for everyone - but well written for mature audiences

This is a good adult contemporary novel - it is definitely for mature audiences only.

At first, I didn't like the book. Laynie, our main character, was portrayed as being incredibly shallow. She only seemed to care about her looks and getting attention from whichever man was in the room. We come to find out that this is purposeful because Laynie has had some issues in her past with being overly obsessive about boyfriends.

Enter Hudson. He seemed like the overused wealthy male character looking for a pretty girl to entertain him for the month. Then we learn that he is broken, too. Evidently he has been told he is incapable of love.

The initial plot set-up is kind of Pretty Woman, only Laynie isn't a hooker and Hudson needs a girlfriend to get out of a marriage proposal. The storyline progresses nicely into a real problem of a girl who has difficulty with obsession vs a guy who cannot love. Both characters have legitimate insecurity issues that they hide from one another for self-preservation. Both characters want to make positive changes and progress but don't know how to do it.

I really enjoyed the sexiness of the characters and their budding real and fake relationships. Laynie is a tell it like is woman when she feels threatened. Hudson loves to be in control and it's endearing when he lets down his guard a bit.

This is book one in the three book series. I'm curious to see what happens next with them. Potential readers - please know this is an explicit book and not for everyone. Know what you read before you read it!!!! I really enjoyed the smooth writing style. I often wished Laynie would show us more than telling us everything. However, I did enjoy the book overall.

Introduction To The Hermetcia

I found this book interesting for getting the basic idea of what the Hermetica is.

I guess some reviewers think it's too watered down and doesn't match the voluminous original texts. However I read one such book years ago which was overloaded with footnotes and sections written in the original language which unfortunately for me I am not fluent in. There's something to be said for creating an approachable introduction to such a metaphysical subject.

The statements attributed to Thoth / Hermes in this book are very eloquent and poetic at times. He describes the universe as a goddess named Destiny who governs the stars and the constellations of the Zodiac. The Zodiac in turn governs the affairs of us mortals. On the day we are born the position of the constellations will foretell our destiny during this incarnation.

I would like to find a good book about astrology that shows the connections between the Zodiac and Egyptian mysticism if anyone can think of one. I'm interested in what the 12 signs mean in relation to the effects of the constellations on the affairs of mortals.

Some people see a connection between the Egyptian god Thoth and Christ like Thoth was Christ in another incarnation. Edgar Cayce stated that Thoth was the living embodiment of 'The Word' or something to that effect. The Gospel Of John describes Christ in that same way.

Another possible connection with Christ is the way Thoth explained what the term 'born again' means. Christians use that term often but do they know what it really means ? Perhaps they do know but they usually won't explain it in terms of Egyptian mysticism.

I believe Christ traveled to Egypt and studied with the Egyptian priests during the so called missing years that weren't captured in the bible. Christ experienced the Egyptian initiation rites I believe. If what some people believe is true it was Christ Himself who created the Egyptian priesthood and the initiation rites during his life experience as Melchizedek. Although who knows if Melchizedek and Thoth were even normal human beings. Perhaps they were something more.

That's why Saint Augustine said that Christianity has always existed and is the one true religion. The authors show that quote in the introduction.

It's an interesting theory that ancient and secret knowledge is passed along to a chosen few in every generation. Some people think that Pythagoras and Plato may have been two of those people.

The search for the origins of philosophy will I believe lead us back to ancient Egypt and ultimately to Atlantis. Mythology is the common thread between all of the world's religions, even the evil ones like Satanism. Although I'm not sure that saying Satan is 'evil' is totally accurate either.

Zeus, Osiris, Isis and those others are very real. Have no doubt about that.

Inspiring synopsis, a classic to keep

Hermes was clearly a great genius, but it's hard to know the precise meaning of the ancient writings, so scholars are prone to argue about translations. In my view, the arguments miss the point. Great truths resist translation to words, so we must use our intuition to ride along with the prose so we can receive enlightenment. Then our understanding can be filled in directly from source, within. In this version, I found the streaming lyrical script this author uses to be very inspiring and illuminating. I just like to keep this book around, pick it up now and then, and read. Hermes was what in India would have been called a guru, a sage, a mahatma, and he is talking about the living cosmos, the embodiment of awareness from top to bottom in this universe. He says the universe is breathing and singing, and in that divine vibration everything is happening. We are an intimate part of it, and knowing that is incredibly exciting. As above, so below. As without, so within. We are an atom in a galaxy, but within us are billions of tiny worlds as well. There is no end to the glory of Atum ( the one god and infinite spirit ). Every time I read this book I get a little more understanding. compare to Upanishads, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and tibetan teachings about the nature of the cosmos. Wonderful book. If you also want a more scholarly approach to the complete teachings of Hermes, there are many other great titles.

About the Author
Esther Joy van der Werf loves to help people improve their vision naturally. After improving her own eyesight through the Bates Method she became a Natural Vision Educator in August 2000. She has presented keynote lectures and workshops at international holistic vision conferences. Esther teaches in the USA and Europe as well as world-wide through internet. Esther currently resides in Ojai, California, where she enjoys life in the sun.

Excellent Bates Method Book

In this book Esther gets you started from page one, assuming no prior familiarity with natural vision improvement using the Bates Method. Her writing style is encouraging, sincere, and enthusiastic, backed by a deep knowledge of the Bates Method from years of full-time professional practice and from reading Dr. Bates' original writings from the early 1900's.

To get you oriented in the book, she uses large print. That will encourage people who use reading glasses to either discard their glasses entirely to read the book, or to use lower power glasses.

Esther gradually reduces the font size throughout the book, even offering identical passages, back to back in progressively smaller fonts. Contrary to popular opinion, fine print is NOT bad for your eyes. In fact, it promotes relaxed vision. And some of the print in this book is very tiny, much smaller than you will find in a "regular" book - which is a good thing! It's all to help promote relaxed, clear vision. The book would be much less effective without this feature.

Who will benefit from this book? The Bates Method is not a "quick fix" gimmick. If you've heard of the Bates Method and are more than casually committed to trying it for presbyopia (middle-aged sight); or if you're a serious student of the Bates Method; or if you understand the power of self-healing; or if you consider yourself a spiritual person and believe in finding answers within, then this book is for you.

PS: One tiny complaint about the physical book itself: The covers tend to curl. That's a minor annoyance, and I didn't deduct any stars for that.

Excellent book. Well and clearly written. Complete !

Having read this book I can say it has been very useful reading journey or experience. The
information is thorough and complete and gave me a constant smile.
The reason for my smile was the clear quality of explaining !
In my opinion the book is a very interesting buy for both teachers ( I am a
Bates NVI teacher ) and people with presbyopia. But also when you are interested in any other
eyecondition(s) it is for certain worth the buy. Topics like central fixation are very often not very easy
to understand. I have not found a book giving a better explanation ! The information and instruction
are simple, exact and logical and you can experience things while reading.

It helped me improve my own small print reading vision in just 2 weeks ! I could not read small print
at all with my left eye. Now I can. The only 2 things I did every day for about 3 or 5 minutes was
reading small print and using some of the tools provided by this book. By the way the name for not
having the same acuity in your eyes anisometropia. This is mentioned in this book. This book
triggered me to test both my eyes. I did not know I had this inbalanced eye condtition.

Just to emphasize how complete this book is. Every reference is given. Which also shows how much
.... the author has put in the book. I wanted to say effort, but I can also say how much interest the
author has in the subject presbyopia ( or old age sight) in combination with NVI
I have also read a lot of great sentences which I can directly use for my teachings. When books
become this well written teachers become less important. However Esther advices to contact your
local Bates teacher as well. I also think that is wise thing to do. To make sure you do learn and reach
your full potential and do not make mistakes or slow down in your relearnings. Make sure you make
your progress measurable. Or determine at which position your vision becomes a challenge. This
makes going this route very motivating. Accept where you are at this moment do not accept to stay
there. Find a teacher who teaches and understands the right vision habits. ( Sketch, Breath and Blink
and the main principles. If your teacher only talks about exercises find another teacher. Important
themes are Relaxatiom movement and Central fixation. And of course imagination. ) Most teacher
can teach you the basics very quickly. The law of adaptation is always present in the right and in the
wrong direction. Without any doubt this is a 5 star book !!!

I'm delighted with your book, Read Without Glasses at Any Age! I'm 69 years old, and can read the finest print on labels, thanks to my practice of the methods you advocate in your book. Since 1994, I have been reading fine print as often as possible. When I have articles to print out on the computer, I always reduce the type to a 6 or 8point font. I started doing it for practice and to save paper, but now I find it easier on my eyes to read fine print than larger type. There are many invaluable suggestions in your book. I thank you for writing it, Esther. I've been a Vision Educator for 25 years and it's always been on my mind to write a book. Now I don't have to do it!
