inspiring book

The book is inspiring, well written and wonderfully printed.
It is accessible as it is more like an art book than a technical
or mathematical book.

The choice of objects which were printed is rather
conservative: polyhedra and polytopes, three dimensional
curved objects, knots and surfaces. Some topics were inspired
by early pioneers of 3D printing like George Hart. There
are also example sculptures from artists like
Vladimir Bulatov or Bathsheba Gossman.

An appendix contains some comments on pictures, sometimes with
hints on where the inspiration comes from. Unfortunately a
bibliography is missing.
The first chapter contains some information how the photographs
were obtained. In an appendix there is some information on
how the objects were generated. It is however not a technical
"how to" book. This is smart, as such a book would be short lived.
It is also not a mathematical book. I would place it into the
art and graphics section as sculptures are a form of graphics.

Having seen a draft of an early version of the book, I felt
already then, it would become a nice book. As it is challenging to bring
mathematics to a more general audience, I'm surprised how well
it turned out. I approve of the perfect title as I had
co-authored in 2013 an article with a similar title and it really
hits the spot of the book: it is all about the art of
visualization of mathematical structures with an exciting new
technology.

great stuff, but ...

This guy is really good. I've read a couple of his books, and have always been impressed how much wisdom and honesty there are in them.

This book strikes me as particularly realistic. Instead of the typical pablum about teamwork, growth, etc., he really lays it on the line. Let's face it: the typical organization is rather dysfunctional, politics are big, not everybody you meet has it all together, you have to play the game, it's not what you know ... all that good stuff.

His basic thrust is that this is reality. You can stew about it, you can complain about it, you can worry about it, but none of that really changes anything. So, if you want to do something about it, you have to basically start with yourself. You have to determine what you can do (and very little of that involves the full frontal assault that is so tempting to the disgruntled) and go ahead and actually do it. At the same time, you also have to keep in mind that there are a ton of things you simply cannot change.

The advice seems really spot-on. My guess is it comes, not from speculating about what might or should be, but from lots and lots of talking with real people on the couch.

On the other hand, I'm giving this only 4 stars because it seemed to be perhaps a little TOO realistic. At points, I got a feeling that he was simply telling me to just suck it up - or to just grow up. He also very straightforwardly says to suck up and to be a bit of a phony.

I think there's a lot of truth to these, but would have appreciated a little more selling on his part, maybe a little more nuance. I know a lot of these things are true, but it doesn't make me like them any more. How do I deal with that dissonance?

In addition, my 25 years experience in the real world tells me that not all companies are the same. I've been at some total turkeys and at some really great ones. My personal advice would be, if you're at a turkey, to suck it up until you can move on to that better company. Perhaps listening to people on the couch all day gave Dr. Bernstein a rather *jaundiced* view of reality. ;^)

One final strength of this book is the writing style. It's short, sweet, to the point, structured (i.e., lots of lists and short, targeted sections), and also uses humor and stories very tellingly.

I'm reading it again and again.

I feel empowered and smart after reading, Am I the only SANE ONE working here? Dr. Albert Bernstein offers practical solutions to everyday problems in the workplace. The solutions include guidance on how I can make the change happen without expectation of others changing first. I recall following the survival solutions for defusing anger and had immediate results because my actions changed the other person's response. The book is well written, easy to understand, and memorable. It is the kind of book you will want to reference when issues arise. I was amazed at how this author could come up with something so useful. It's a must read for anyone who wants to understand how to survive and even thrive in the workplace. Kate Kelley

Practical solutions

We all want to be right. The other books try to help you convince other people that you are. Just say this and your problem is solved. Unfortunately, your coworkers didn't read that book so they don't react the way the book said they would.

You cannot change other people. It's rare that you can change situations that other people have control over. This book pounds home the fact that you can only change your reaction to the situations and people you encounter.

It's not enough to just know that fact. Knowing it's true and making it work are 2 different things. Solutions are explained in such a way that you can use them. You aren't dependent on how the other people acting or reacting. It's up to you and what you are willing to let go... really let go.

You behave based on what will help you achieve your own goals not on your emotions. And sometimes you just have to suck it up. This situation can't be changed because you are not in charge. Deal with it or leave.

Good identity proof book

Laguerre polynomials, Legendre polynomials, Bessel functions, Chebyshev polynomials, Debye functions, Elliptic function, Error function, Fresnel integrals, Gamma function (Incomplete/Complete), Gegenbauer polynomials, Jacobi polynomials, Hankel functions, Hermite polynomials, Hypergeometric functions, Kelvin's functions, Kummer function, Logarithmic integral, Neumann functions, Riemann Zeta function, Weber-Hermite functions.
The Chapter list is as follows:

1. Series solution of Differential Equations
2. Gamma and Beta functions
3. Legendre polynomials and functions
4. Bessel functions
5. Hermite polynomials
6. Laguerre polynomials
7. Chebyshev polynomials
8. Gegenbauer and Jacobi polynomials
9. Hypergeometric functions

All the other functions i listed before are covered in less detail than the main chapter titles. This book has a very great deal of recursive ways of finding identities between special functions and does a good job doing so. I read this to learn more about the special functions i was using in some of my physics classes to get more depth about them and this book definitely covers a good deal of deriving a lot of these interesting identities through mostly recursive relations, summation methods and identities between previously proven functions so there is a lot of flipping if you want to check between steps. I can't say i read this book casually, i actually had to write down some of the equations and work them out myself and it did take a bit of time but i was happy with the result. As for the problems in the book, the proven identities come in very handy when solving some tough problems that would normally take much longer if done using any other methods and are pretty applicable for example some high level physics courses like quantum and statistical mechanics. The book is very cheap for the amount of reference you will get out of it and the added depth on deriving identities for the main chapter equations is really worth it

Excellent text for a graduate Student in applied Math and Engineering

This is a good text for graduate Engineering students that take a course the incorporates Special Functions in the course material, i.e., Electromagnetics. One can search the Internet for answers on a function like the Gamma Function or you can get this text that contains many of these Special Functions in one place. I found his discussion of the Chebyshev Differential Equation and the resultant solution particularly clear relative to the Chebyshev Polynomial of the 1 st Kind and he removes confusion that is normally in other texts and on-line sources relative to the Chebyshev Polynomial of the 2nd Kind. Bell is very clear in his proofs - they are meant for someone with an applied bent. His material is straightforward and his organization of the material and presentation follow a logical flow. He develops tools and Theorems along the way to achieve an ultimate learning goal for the student. The book is another example where the Senior Editor, John Grafton, and his technical staff at Dover Publications know how to pick classical texts that merit publication.

Christian Ministry - Ouside the Box

Richard Mull candidly relates the story of how God broke into his very natural existence in a supernatural way. "The Jesus Training Manual" is made up of two parts: Mull's personal encounter with God and the Biblical foundations for experiencing the God of the Bible, hearing His voice, walking in His authority and power, and finding His will for your life.

Mull advocates that God still works in the realm of the miraculous, that demons are real and we can know how to deal with them. He gives Biblical principles and truths about the Kingdom of God, healing, spiritual battles, and our spiritual armor for fighting those battles.

I found the study questions at the end of each chapter practical, probing, and heart searching, personally opening up the possibility of considering new perspectives on the meaning of discipleship and experiencing Christ's fullness in my walk with Him. These exercises become a vital core to the training manual especially when opportunities are available to discuss in a group or classroom situation along with the supporting material provided in the book's narrative.

Mull's unique story is one of allowing his character to be shaped and reshaped as the result his perseverance in praying to become a transformer of lives through a ministry to individuals tormented by fear, anxiety, depression, and negative thinking.

Richard is convinced that when we limit God we are also limiting the extent of our experience with Him. He recaps the price of radically pursuing God. You can expect: rejection from your peers, you will be forced to overcome your skepticism; rethink your theological hang ups, and religious constraints to stand on Biblical principles alone.

Living a Life of Miracles, Signs and Wonders

This author (although unknown before to me) has captured in a beautiful and loving manner, in his writings, one of the best books to serve as a training manual for each Christian to learn, grow and serve in the miracles, signs and wonders of our Lord.
Have you thought about it? How many sermons, Bible studies, small group meetings have addressed the over 30 miracles recorded in the gospels for each of us to learn how to apply what Jesus was and is teaching us in His miracles? Probably not too many!
The author discusses in 9 chapters his person encounter with God, and then in 7 more chapters he provides for us the biblical foundations to help us learn what our life today should be as we follow Jesus.
This is a great book and one to be used as a guide with the Bible for teachings as we all learn to operate in the miracles, signs and wonders of our Lord. Read and grow in the life of our Lord His son Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

Being Discipled by Jesus

Richard Mull reminds me of the Apostle Paul. Richard, the author was educated in seminary had a position as a youth pastor. Everything was going great until God no longer fit the box of Richard's theology. Richard knew how to make programs, sermons, and counsel people. He did not understand what it meant or how to disciple people. He also did not believe that God healed today or did signs and miracles. Similarly to Paul, Richard had his experience with God. This was done through another man who was sent by God to destroy his theological box. Richard then spent time re-examining the Scriptures for himself to see what they revealed. It changed the way he understood Scripture. The first part of the book is Richard's journey from god shattering his theological box to his current understanding of God. The second half of the book is how this new understanding has healed and set people free. Richard does not just want to make Christians, but disciples of Jesus who can do the same things that Jesus and His disciples did. Jesus was able to train the 12 and the 72 to do the same things He did. Would you like to walk in the same power as Jesus did? Do you want to be discipled by Jesus? Open your hearts and minds to what Richard has to offer. Check the Scriptures to see if what he says is true as you read the book. you could be a disciple of Jesus and do the same things that He has done in greater measure. Are you willing to open yourself?

Great history of "DJ as artist"

A must read for all aspiring and current DJ's alike. This well reasearched book covers it all: from the beginning of single-turntable jocks to US and European Big Band spinners; it treks thru the Motown/Stax DJs, with a quick nod to the Jamacian "Sound System" approach before taking you thru Northern Soul and the NY Gay Disco trend-setting dual-turntable "mixing" innovators. With many "choice" classic cuts pointed out along the way, there's a myriad of names you will undoubtedly recognize from their many remixes in the dance/house/diva-pop genre. On a personal note it was thrilling to see both Robbie Leslise (Studio 54, The Saint) and Shep Pettibone (Mastermix remix/Productions too many to list, and co-author of Vogue & many other Madonna hits,) mentioned in the book. Not only do I have the utmost honor of being a resident DJ in Shep's amazing "Paradise" niteclub, but I also just had the privilege to spin alongside Robbie on a recent RSVP Caribbean Cruise. Living Legends both, and sweetheart gents to boot! (by dj Mick Hale, 2013)

Being a DJ myself since the mid-80's, it was an immense pleasure to remember a lot from scene that I lived my youth in, partied and played and followed since then. But it was even better to LEARN a HUGE lot about the history and development of this art before I fell in love with dance music and DJing.

The book shows an enormous amount of research and data, names, tracks, labels, clubs and everything. And it's cleverly written, in such a way you feel like following a novel. It goes well into advancing through the time, showing all the different, multiple and sometimes parallel scenes that took place in sometimes far away places, connecting the dots and highlighting influences, as they happened in fact.

Today, with internet and iTunes and online music stores one can read the book and go search for the artists, DJs and the music playlisted in the book while reading it, making up for an amazing "timeline" soundtrack that encompasses a great part of modern life. I did exactly that of course, and had such a good time discovering new stuff as well as "crate digging" my collection of records, most listed on the book, But even if you don't I certainly recomend you look around and hear every track as you read the book, it's a lesson and I'm sure you'll have lots of fun while learning a lot too.

DJing is no longer a "career" for me, though I still play clubs, gigs and radio shows frequently. I guess you love music and that's it, you can't leave it or get left by it if you really love playing. This book shows why, the people who love finding new music, people who are daring, creative, passionate about discovering new sounds and showing to people to make them dance, that's such an amazing craft.

Though the book sometimes lack depth about specifics (I'd like to have read more about some important tunes, artists, scenes or clubs), that's more on a personal note than a "fail" as it would have been impossible to tell everything about everything. DJing and all that it means is such a broad, wide and deep scene that it would take many books (they exist, even from the authors) but this one is very special and reaches a high standard in all aspects. It's mandatory for music lovers, society researchers, marketeers and of course, DJs. Just read it!

I'm glad my friend recommended this book to me. I was floored at the red thread that ran through my musical tastes not like a string, but like the mighty Mississippi River. From rock & roll allnighters, the mod scene of northern soul (myself an avid scooterist), the beautiful disaster of disco giving rise to early house music, and of course the hiphop scene of the almighty grandmasters of the Bronx DJ culture, I lived some of it, and I am part of it now myself as I bring all that music together at parties and basements today. It is the most awakening musical journey.

Authors rely on Silencing the Self theory, which details the negative psychological effects when individuals silence themselves in close relationships and the importance of the social context in precipitating depression. Specific patterns of thought about how to achieve closeness in relationships (self-silencing schema) are known to predict depression. This book breaks new ground by demonstrating that the linkage of depressive symptoms with self-silencing occurs across a range of cultures. We offer a new view of gender differences in depression situated in the formation and consequences of self-silencing, including differing motivational aims, norms of masculinity and femininity, and the broader social context of gender inequality.

The book offers evidence regarding why women's depression is more wide-spread than men's and why the treatment of depression lies in understanding that a person's individual psychology is inextricably related to the social world and close relationships. Authors examine not only gender differences in depression but also related aspects of mental and physical illness, including treatments specific to women. Several chapters describe the transformative possibilities of community-driven movements for disadvantaged women that support healing through a recovery of voice, and describe the need for systemic and structural changes to counter violations of human rights as a means of reducing women's risk of depression. About the Author

Dana C. Jack, EdD, is Professor at Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies/Western Washington University. Her research examines women's depression and anger in the U. S. and internationally, and qualitative research methods. She was a Fulbright Scholar to Nepal in 2001, and is author of three books, including Silencing the Self: Women and Depression.

Alisha Ali, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Psychology at New York University. Her research examines social influences on women's depression, including the effects of emotional abuse, racism, and harassment. She is currently principal investigator on a series of studies examing economic empowerment for survivors of domestic violence.
