Their attraction sparks unexpected new conduits among them, but when they realize Jon’s certificate comes with a terrible price, they must risk everything to foil an Anti-Mech plot—and hope they survive to lose themselves in each other’s arms.

Sometimes three is the perfect number!
By Tifferz
4 Stars, 4 Flames
Interlocking Hearts is the second book in the DMA Files by Roxy Mews. In the first book, Coral-600, we were introduced to the main characters, Paisley, Quinn and Coral; and what it means to be human. Interlocking Hearts follows Paisley, Coral’s best friend, who is trying to find her place after her friend decides to take on the human world. I believe that this should not be read alone as it ties in with Coral-600.
After reading about Paisley in the first book I was interested in her story as she had some mystery to her. She hid behind her…outgoing personality…so strongly you couldn’t help but want to peel back the layers. Paisley knows what she does and does not want out of life and love has no place in hers. Jon and Ben are roommates and best friends with Quinn, Coral’s boyfriend. With Coral taking on the government to grant humanoids humanity, they find themselves up against an enemy they were not totally prepared for. Jon and Ben are there to find out who is behind the Anti-Mech protests and suspect it is an inside job. Jon in his former life was a pleasure bot who was abused and mistreated by his former owners; whereas Ben has had the same treatments that Quinn underwent. Did I mention they enjoy sharing?
Paisley sets out to seduce Mr. Hottie, aka Ben, before she realizes that Ben and Jon come as a package deal. But what better way to satisfy her hunger than between these two sexy men. But as they get to know one another they realize their attraction runs so much deeper. As Paisley joins Coral in helping give robots human rights, she starts to see she wants more; love, passion, and a future.
I enjoyed this novel because we got to delve deeper into the humanoids and who they are. I thought it was a perfect edition to The DMA Files Series. Paisley is a woman who is not afraid of who she and so many of us can relate to her. The tension between the trio, Jon, Paisley, and Ben kept me intrigued until the last page. The three are a perfect together as they all balance each other out. Ben is the serious and understanding one, Jon’s the protective and in-your-face one, and Paisley is the fun-loving and cautious all help each other heal the wounds that never seemed to close. It is a great continuation to this series and I sincerely hope there is another novel to the series. Plus I would not mind getting to know Jon a bit more. I think it is the whole robohippie thing he has going on. Yum!

I was given a copy of this book as a gift from The JeepDiva in exchange for an honest review. The opinions and ratings are my own and I was in no way compensated for my review.

Interlocking Hearts

Paisley Compton uses her sexuality as a shield, Ben jumps on the chance to get Jon his certificate of humanity and Jon trusts no one. They will have to risk everything to foil an Anti-Mech plot in this exciting sci-fi romance.

Jon’s been used and abused by his former owners so he’s determined to get to the bottom of the sexy mystery wrapped in a maid’s uniform who is distracting Ben and the readers can’t help but be charmed by this threesome as their attraction sparks unexpected new conduits among them. The chemistry sizzles with lots of heat and shorts quite a few circuits with some scorching sex scenes, but having a relationship is a bit of a stretch for these three as some emotional issues and personal demons get in the way. These strong, charismatic characters delight readers with lots of humor and their special situation which of course adds spice as well as depth to the story while the steady to fast paced plot draws readers in with lots of suspense, excitement and romance.

Anticipation builds throughout the story as Paisley lands in various humorous situations as she tries her best to fight the sparks that she feels for Jon and Ben and spine tingling suspense builds as they try to discover just who is behind the Anti-Mech movement and just what it means for Paisley and her friends. The intriguing events keep the readers hanging on every word as the well written scenes capture the imagination and bring the story to life.

Honestly, I wasn’t sure that I was going to like this one, but I really enjoy the Hart Clan Hybrid series, so I decided to give it a try and I quite surprised by the interesting and different world that I found myself in which kept me quite enthralled until the very end. I haven’t read the first one yet and it was obvious that I missed a few things but not anything that kept me from enjoying this one and I can’t wait to read the next one.

Robo-Love (3.5 stars)
By Book Gannet
After really enjoying the first book in this series (Coral-600), I was intrigued to see what happened next with Coral’s human roommate, Paisley. And for the most part this book is every bit as enjoyable as the first. The chemistry between Paisley, Jon and Ben is scorching, the sex is hot and there’s plenty of humor to keep this deeper, more involved plot ticking along.

Paisley is a strong, compelling character. Her failed marriage has left her avoiding love, though she still enjoys sex. Lots of sex. Preferably with strangers. She’s not interested in a relationship, since that only leads to hurt. So while the idea of hooking up with Jon and Ben definitely appeals, the idea of more terrifies her.

Jon and Ben are quite the pair. Jon isn’t human, but then Ben’s not entirely organic either, yet there’s no denying that they are both strong characters with plenty of humanity. I would have liked to have known more about both of them, because what little we learn only left me more intrigued – especially about Jon. But then this book isn’t really big on world-building or fleshing out character’s pasts beyond what is absolutely necessary. There’s a city and a palace and a king and queen, but I have no idea where any of this is, if it’s even in our world (although Japan is mentioned), or what century it’s all set in. Ben and Jon have a military past, but I have no idea of the war. However, this only really bothered me after I’d finished the book and was looking back, because the story itself is mainly about the characters and they definitely held my attention.

As hot as the mnage scenes were between Paisley, Jon and Ben, I have to admit that at first things were a little uncomfortable for me. Mostly because while Paisley wanted them physically, her head is definitely on a different track. I found it hard to work out what Paisley wanted, so at times, although she’s responding to both men, it felt a little more coerced than I would have liked. Thankfully that does go away and Paisley is definitely on board for most of their fun. I loved the relationship between Ben and Jon too, even if Ben’s habit of talking about Jon as if he wasn’t there (and likewise Paisley too) was kind of annoying. The sex – while hot – also felt a touch repetitive, since the second encounter was really similar to the first, which was an unexpected shame.

The plot itself doesn’t just revolve around sex – shocking! In fact, when Paisley’s not thinking about her two men, she’s actually quite busy, working with Coral, trying to find the source of the anti-mech propaganda. Much as I enjoyed this side of things, there were a couple of leaps of logic that came conveniently out of nowhere to help solve everything. It tended to leave me scratching my head rather than going with the flow, and I found it a bit jolting.

Overall, though, this was an enjoyable piece of sexy sci-fi, that makes a solid effort at expanding the story beyond the bedroom. Although it would have been nice to have had a bit more world-building and to have known more about Jon and Ben, on the whole I liked it. I hope there’s still more to come from this series.

Good news and bad news!
By A Customer
I like this book a great deal, and I reference it frequently. It has information, photos, pattern charts, and drawings that deal with the Scandinavian knitting tradions. Some of it is very different from American or English traditions. HOWEVER, do not expect to find stitch by stitch mitten or sweater patterns. There are none! This book is more about technique; for example, there is a very good section on socks. This includes details for turning the heel, etc, but no exact pattern for the whole sock. Instead you create your own, and now you can knit a sock to any size or with any yarn you might have lying around. This is not a book for a timid knitter who likes to have everything laid out for him/her in the instructions; it does not offer that kind of information. It is still an interesting read and a good reference for those who like traditional and/or ethnic knitting. (And as far as I am concerned, this is the only kind of knitting.)

Publisher, Please Reprint This Book!!!
By Blank Stare
I sure do wish the publisher would consider reprinting this book. I've checked it out from my library a zillion times. What an inspiration. The coloring on my ballband dishcloths got really crazy after looking at this book.

There are some real patterns in this book, but they are balanced with a more creative approach that demonstrates how to think about patterns, yarns and colors in order to create one's own personal pieces. The author does this in a way that doesn't seem difficult and seems playful and improvisational. The "Gauge" lesson shows how to make an interesting fabric using all sorts of different size needles, for example.

There is an introductory chapter on Scandinavian knitting and then chapters on making different types of clothing, like sweaters, caps, socks, mittens, shawls.

add to your Scandinavian knitting library
By Lisa Linnell-Olsen
Vibeke Lind did her homework in this nice book covering Scandinavian Knitting. There are pictures of historical garments, old photos and art showing the placed knitting held throughout history in these countries, and several patterns for hats, scarves, mittens, and gloves to keep a knitter busy. This is now an older title, so many of the sweater patterns have a looser, boxier fit than what has been in style for the last decade. Still, for the historical documentation, stitch patterns, and general Scandinavian knitting survey , his is a nice book to add to your personal library if Scandinavian sweaters make your heart sing.

The Serial Garden: The Complete Armitage Family Stories, by Joan Aiken, Andi Watson, Garth Nix, Lizza Aiken

"In a singularly important publishing even, the first complete collection of Aiken’s 24 beloved Armitage cycle of stories appears here for the first time. The family who dwells in and out of magical worlds transcends fantasy and enters the world of classic, entrancing literature. Belongs on every child’s bookshelf. For all ages."
—Smithsonian Magazine Notable Books for Children 2008

"For sheer charm it’s hard to beat these wonderful, dead-pan comic tales about one family’s adventures—nearly always on a Monday—with ghosts, witches, time travel, the Furies and every sort of magic."
—Michael Dirda, The Washington Post Book World

"Buy it to read to your kids, and you’ll find yourself sneaking tastes on the sly; a little Aiken is a fine thing to have in your system at any age."
—Salon.com

"Joan Aiken’s invention seemed inexhaustible, her high spirits a blessing, her sheer storytelling zest a phenomenon. She was a literary treasure, and her books will continue to delight for many years to come."
—Philip Pullman

“The best kind of writer, strange and spooky and surprising, never sentimental or whimsical.”
—Kelly Link

"Gathered under one cover from several Aiken collections, the magical, eccentric and very British Armitage family reappears in a collection of 24 stories, four never before published. The Armitages’ wacky magic (usually a Monday occurrence) and that of their fantastical town, a place filled with witches and magical beings, rises from the pages when matters go slightly awry, in the manner of Edward Eager and E. Nesbit."
—Kirkus Reviews

"Readers of all ages have the opportunity to enjoy some of the best writing by one of the most superb and timeless fantasy writers."
—Green Man Review

"The Armitage’s world grows richer as it is extended. This is a collection of stories which allow—in fact demand—the reader joins in with their own imagination and remakes the story inside their own head. Aiken’s pragmatism shows through in her stories. Instead of remaining in or reflecting upon the past like some of her contemporaries, they show an author making the best of the world and coming out ahead with humor and imagination.”
—January Magazine

"Each of the tales brims with old-fashioned adventure and charm. An excellent way to show Harry Potter fans that magic can come in small doses too."
—Author Magazine

This is the first complete collection of Joan Aiken’s beloved Armitage stories—and it includes four new, unpublished stories. After Mrs. Armitage makes a wish, the Armitage family has “interesting and unusual” experiences every Monday (and the occasional Tuesday). The Board of Incantation tries to take over their house to use as a school for young wizards; the Furies come to stay; and a cutout from a cereal box leads into a beautiful and tragic palace garden. Charming and magical, the uncommon lives of the Armitage family will thrill and delight readers young and old. Includes Joan Aiken’s “Prelude” from Armitage, Armitage, Fly Away Home, as well as introductions from Joan Aiken’s daughter, Lizza Aiken, and best-selling author Garth Nix. Illustrated by Andi Watson.

When the Family Pet Is a Unicorn
By Kate Coombs
This is old-fashioned story telling at its finest, reminding me why so few books manage to stick in my head these days. The best books are great because they are truly creative, as opposed to predictable and mundane.

Of course, Joan Aiken's gift is for making the ordinary extraordinary. A family called the Armitages lives in a house where magical things tend to happen, often--but not always--on Mondays. Mark and Harriet and their parents simply keep an eye out for such happenings, participating with true British aplomb as well as gusto. It's a place where your great-uncle's mythic apple might attract the Greek Furies to your basement, your parents might be turned into ladybugs, or a quince tree might be stolen by a lady journalist who is also a witch. Where you might be asked to raise a baby griffin, which sounds like fun until you discover just how much the creatures can eat. Where little people prove to be much more grubby and querulous than Mary Norton's Borrowers, and where cutting a puzzle off the back of a cereal box may lead you to a spell that has trapped someone inside for a century.

Most of the stories are funny, and some of them are poignant. Any child who loves the Narnia books and isn't locked into sitcom-type story telling will find that Joan Aiken's Serial Garden is the real thing--a fantasy book that leaves you saying, "Ahhhh" after you finish it.

Joan Aiken is best known for The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, one of my favorite books as a child (and as an adult). But if you want to find out how to handle two druids fighting in your backyard over a bathmat woven of beard hair, you really should read The Serial Garden.

Class stories from a master
By Amazon Customer
These stories are intelligent, witty pre-Harry Potter gems. I loved them in my teens, twenties, and again as an adult. The Armitages are an ordinary family of a different era who deal with their weekly dose of magic with humor, common sense, and tenderness. No vampires or zombies, just brilliant writing and characters you'll remember forever.

Magical stories
By Margaret Kim Peterson
I read about this book in the May/June 2009 issue of The Horn Book, and although I'd hardly read any other Joan Aiken (somehow, as a child, I got the idea that I didn't like her books) was somehow moved to order it. I'm so glad I did. I read the entire thing aloud to my 8-year-old son, who said, about halfway through, "I love these stories." They were just magical--not only in subject matter, but in their tone, their turns of plot, their gentleness, their sheer imaginative whimsy. Among my favorite stories was the one about the governess at the seaside cottage whose ghost is given rest when Harriet and Mark figure out what she is distressed about and contrive to relieve her anxiety. And the title story is simply breathtaking. Read this book--you'll love it, too!
